Hey all.
I’ve got a lathe with a 2hp Powercraft motor. Got the 100-year-old lathe last summer and just today got it set up and running. The motor is wired for 220.
After running for about 3 minutes, the rpms roughly doubled. I promptly turned it off. I turned it on again a minute later. It started, then about 10 seconds later sped up again to what I guess is full speed.
Is there a problem here? I have no idea how long the motor has sat without running, at least 8 months. Maybe the dust is just getting blown out.
Any input is appreciated.

Take off the end plate and see it there is a centrifugal switch inside. It may be gummed up and sticking. If you can easily get to it, clean it up with acetone and cotton swabs. A little sandpapering on the contacts would help too.
If that fails, then see about replacement capacitors.
If none of the above, then it may be a short in the motor. Tighten any inside screw connections you see.
Make sure the motor is unplugged first!
I shudder to think of a 2 hp motor on a lathe. There would be no stopping it if you ever got tangled up.

Dried out ballbearings, dirty contacts on centrifical starting winding switch, dampness in field coils or all of the above.
Wiring not up to snuff, switch contacts dirty, extension cord too long/ too light, machine frozen in it's bearings, V belt slipping or hardened, or all of the above. Stein.
Have the motor tested by a pro
Mike,Stein,
I took the "mouse ears" off and one of the contacts was half burned off and broke when I opened it. I replaced the contact but I'm still not getting full speed out of the motor.
Now the ground is sparking like crazy. I guess I'll have it checked out.Jase--Is there a better way?
