I have a delta M300 hollow chisel mortiser, is it safe to use a 2inch forstner bit, basically use it like a drill press?

Don't see why not -- if the bit shank is long enough to clear the chisel housing. (Mine wouldn't be.)

Whoa! 2" -- I missed that (I was thinking 3/4"). I'd be surprised if your mortiser had the umph to run that big a bit.

Sounds like a bad idea. Thanks for the input.
I'd have my doubts about that kind of weight and leverage (2"). True, it's a drill machine, but even the largest of its bits are like half an inch or so. Honestly, I don't know.
Not familiar with mortisers. Do they have variable speed? I set my drill press for a slower speed for a bit that size (more torque, less burning). In any case, clamp the piece down good. Long ago, someone posted here about holding a piece by hand and using a large bit. The bit caught, spun the piece around which whacked his thumb clean off.

"Not familiar with mortisers. Do they have variable speed?" No, they don't.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Don't know about the Delta, but my SC runs at 1725. That's way above the speed recommended for the 2" Forstner I own.
