How are weekend woodworking projects defined? For the record, I am a veteran beginning-intermediate wood worker.
I decided to make something out of Claro Walnut. I thought I’d try something simple, something that could easily be built in a weekend, a mailbox. Here it is, a MONTH into it and I’m finally gluing it up. It’s only 6 small pieces of wood!
Here’s how it progressed:
1) Shopping/picking out the wood. $13.64/bf yikes. -one day
2) Jointing and planing the wood slowly – three days.
3) Re-sawing and planing the 7/8′ square stock to 3/8 inch. (watch pieces warp!) -one day
4) Cutting and culling out the ugly to get 6 nice pieces – one day.
5) Pre-finishing inside parts with 4-5 coats of wipe on poly – two days
6) Glue up and waiting for glue to dry. – one day

I think they mean Having the wood already finished to size. Weekend projects are just that. Just thank God your not building a house
Well... I'm not building a house anymore, that was last years project! (well... contractor's actually built the house). But even there, when I was installing the baseboard, all the work was, again, jointing and plaining the rough cherry boards into nice 3/4 inch x 7-/1/4 inch baseboard. I think I went through three sets of planer knives and two sets of jointer knives.
Maybe the project is worked on mostly on the weekends. For me every day is Saturday.Ron
my general rule of thumb is figure how long you think it will take and multiply by 3. Therefore a weekend project equates to a mont because on of those weekends the wife is going to have you doing something.

I have several "weekend" projects on the go which are now "multi year" :)
I think I see the problem.... too many coffee breaks

PS.... Post pictures... I'd like to see a mailbox made from claro walnut. Most of the ones I've seen are cedar and/or oak.
Final assembly was supposed to have been Sunday when the last coat of finish dried. Of course, the piano hinge screws are too long for the thickness of the wood! When I make another trip to the hardware store, I'll get new screws. From there... It should just be a couple of more weekends ;). BTW: There's nothing like staring at a pile of projects in your shop with a cup of coffee in hand!
Here it is.... the weekend project. I think it took four days to screw into the side of the house!
You win..... I can now point out that very nice mail-box to my wife and explain that there is someone who works slower than I do.Like I tell my friends..... QUALITY is more important than QUANTITY. SawdustSteve
I just wonder how all of the TV shows get the projects done in the allotted time. If I am doing something it usually takes a lot longer than I expected.
When your week consists of six Saturdays and a Sunday, "weekend projects" are much more doable.
The "weekend" in weekend projects is always plural. We don't say "a 1 weekend project". It just means that most of us only work on a project on the weekend. But unless I am working on a commission, I enjoy coffee in the mornings, taking my time during the day, and then enjoying a good cigar and a cold beer as I straighten up and put away preparing for the next days pleasurable time in my "mental therapy center", the shop
