I just received a catalogue from Japanese Woodworker and noticed that they have a complete set of hollows and rounds for a pretty reasonable price. Does anyone have any experience with them (the planes, not the catalogue)..any comments on the quality?
Thanks, Neil

Wow! That is one heck of a deal. Just over $300 for a full set. If you get them, please let me know what you think. I may be right behind you in making the purchase.
Thanks for pointing this out,
---Pedro
I have several of these, Did not get the whole set and they seem to work very well. The blades sharpened very nicely. I used a dowel covered with green honing compound and the edge polished up nicely. The bodies are not as tall as some of the old western planes but they do work well.
Have fun.

So, did you end up getting the planes? Have you heard anything more about them? Please share!
---Pedro
not yet, Pedro, but I think some mad money is coming my way this weekend.... that and the money my wife was going to spend on a Rigid oscillating spindle sander for me for Christmas ought to get me there...will keep you apprised
Neil
Please do. I've got a bit saved up myself, and may go in on a couple sets myself if you review favorably.
Best,
---Pedro
Pedro,
Ordered the set this morning, will let you know in a week or so
Neil
Please, what is the order number for the full set of hollows and rounds? My crude search of the Japanwoodworker.com web-based catalog did not turn up a listing for the full set.

Hey Dave,
I'm not sure there is a number. My catalogue was at home and I had to order off the internet catalogue, so I had to order each pair separately. There is supposed to be a 15% discount if all nine sets are ordered which is quite a savings.
Neil
where in Michigan are you? I grew up in Clarkston when it was still a little farm town.
Seriously, guys. Let us know how they come, and how they work. A full set from Clark and Williams is around $2500.00, not to mention the wait. I'm not comparing the two, but if they work well, then what the hey!
Jeff
Thanks for the lead, Neil. I'll check out that 15% discount.
I am in Midland, about two hours north of Detroit. Lots of wood and woods for woodworking, but damned little time for hobbies with work demanding as much as it can take (there are indeed worse problems to have, I know). Are you still in Michigan?
As others have asked, please do share your impressions on the planes when your set arrives. Thanks, again.
Michigan Dave
Any news on those hollows and rounds?
Thanks,
---Pedro
Hi Pedro,
I did receive them but have been so busy that I haven't had much of a chance to use them...they are smaller than their Western cousins and I assume they are pulled toward the operator rather than pushed away. ..the irons are pretty sharp and don't appear to need much if any honing...because I don't have alot of experience with them, I did have some problems adjusting the blade to the right depth and getting the wedge to stay put...then there is the issue of using one's hand as a guide rather than the plane having its own guide...all of these problems appear to be solvable with some (maybe alot) of practice...I'm working on a toybox made from clear pine for one of my grandaughters and am planning to use cherry for the trim...was hoping to be able to make a nice molding pattern using the hollows and rounds....will need to practice on scrap first, probably alot of scrap..will keep you up to date..maybe even post pictures if it turns out well...
Neil
Thank you Neil,
I look forward to the pictures and updates.
Do you usually use Japanese style pull-towards-you type planes, or western?
---Pedro
No, I'm a fan of Western style planes, my favorite being the S20A (I thought I recalled you saying you had one). Unless a task is going to require hours of planing, I prefer hand techniques over machine. Since I don't do it for a living I have that luxury. Most of my planes are LN's with some old Stanleys, a LV jack, a #45 combo and an Emmerich rabbet thrown in. I ordered a dovetailer from Steve Knight several months ago but never heard back, his CNC was on the fritz so I'm not sure whats going on. I've made some sliding dovetail joints on the router table but have never been happy with how they turned out, probably just my inexperience. Was hoping they would turn out better with the hand route.
Neil
Yes, I have an S20A as well. Thing of beauty. What's your favorite plane after this one? Which plane do you use most after this one?
