I am preparing to use water based aniline dye to get a better color match between some cherry boards similar to the process in (I think this month’s) FWW. I am looking for references such as books or online tools and articles to help determine proportions for achieving the desired shade. I realize that there will be some trial and error involved but having some guidance to know weather I should be adding more of one color or another, or diluting, etc. would be helpful.
Thanks
Rich

I posted on this a while back, but could get the search to work. Invest in a Finisher's Color Wheel. Match the base colors you need to the wheel from the store samples. Transtint has a W/B dye for all but the white altough the names don't always match up. The wheel will give you the color. The intensity will be determined by how much dye you use and the top coat. I go w/ half strength dye and sneak up on the intensity.

Rich,
I find "Wood Finishing with George Frank" (Sterling) a valuable resource. It includes several full-color plates. His "Adventures in Wood Finishing" (Taunton) is also helpful and is really fun to read - unlike many "how-to" books.
Good luck,
Paul
