HI,
I am getting ready to make the investment in a miter saw and wanted to get everyones opinion about the Dewalt 12″ compound. Is this a good choice. Will it cut lumber wide enough? Do you need a laser line?
Thanks for the help.

"Will it cut lumber wide enough?" Depends on what you're building. Only you can say. Your next best option is a sliding compound miter saw, if you can afford it.
"Do you need a laser line?" Nobody needs a laser line, and the only ones, IMHO, that are worth the money are the ones that mark the kerf by shining on both sides of the blade. They're cool though, LOL.
I recently went through the "new miter saw selection" procedure, replacing the 8.25" Delta toy that I had. I opted for the Bosch 12" CMS with the extension bars. I love it, it's really solid, and significantly less expensive than the DeWalt. They have a new version out that has all of the controls up front, if you want to be up-to-date.
Mine easily cuts 4x4's and 4x6's. I've even cut a few 2x12's by flipping them over. Not ultra-neat of course, but it works.

Ditto what Forestgirl said. Bosch make a nice saw. if you want to check out others I would look at the Makita LS1212, compound saw. IMO,I think its an excellent saw, not meaning the Bosch is any worst, just different. If I was going to buy, I would buy either one of the above. Good luck.
PS: buy your tool from an industrial tool store where you can get service and parts if needed.
I just got the Makita LS1013 Dual Compound Slider and a DeWalt folding stand. After 20 yrs of using a basic 10" chop saw, it took a while to get used to the Makita but so far it's fantastic. After the first day, I was asking how long this had been legal and why hadn't anyone told me sooner - lol.
Amen on the Big Mak. I upgraded from a European ELU that was smart machine when I bought it 18 years ago, and was blown away!
I make a lot of small boxes with mitred corners. Used to cut them up to a millimetre from final size and then use a big ugly 45 degree shooting board to get the final invisible glue line join. Now, I use my LS1213, and glue up straight from the saw - faultless.
This much fun just can't be legal!
