Hi all, Just finished applying a coat of Bullseye sealcoat on my new cherry kitchen cabinets and have scuff sanded with 400 grit paper. My question is …can I use mineral spirits on a rag to clean up the sanding dust before applying the first coat of spar finish? I know not to use alcohol as the seal coat is a thinned dewaxed shellac. Didn’t see anything in the directions. Help!! Brian

No problem. I use MS as a lubicant when I'm sanding down shellac.

Ditto. Mineral Spirits is my lubricant of choice when sanding any solvent or oil based finish/paint, particularly if the finish isn't fully cured yet. On cured catalyzed finishes I use water sometimes. But, there's nothing better than MS if it's not cured out yet.

Where did you buy the Seal Coat? HD or Lowe's here don't carry it.

Seal Coat can be found in most paint stores and hardware stores, and they'll treat you well and appreciate the business. Often, if they don't have it, they'll order it and you don't have to pay a shipping charge.

HD and Lowe's have forces all paint stores and hardware stores around here out of buisness. :(

Mike.. Rockler carries Bullseye Sealcoat. You might check their new store on the S.W. Fwy to see if they have it on hand.
I deal with a guy over there named Jerry Neiman.. their number is 713-622-6567.

Yeah, I saw their new flyer. But, I basically avoid that part of Houston like it had the plague!
I'm way out west and avoid driving east as much as humanly possible.

Mike, Murphy Brothers on Bissonnet just East of Kirby sell it, and so do Finisher's Supply on, I think, Star, in North Houston.
My memories of the horrors of the Houston climate, and also the suppliers are receding fast, but I do remember that information clearly, ha, ha. Slainte.RJFurniture
When did you leave??
PlaneWood by Mike_in_Katy (maker of fine sawdust!)PlaneWood
Mike, I left Houston in September last year. I took up a lecturing job at home. Cool and foggy this morning. Last week was frosty in the mornings, and pretty nippy throughout the day. Magic! There are some early signs of spring-- daffs are out, some trees and bushes are thinking of budding, mornings get light earlier, etc.. Slainte.RJFurniture
What brought you over to these parts anyway? And why did you leave?
I guess you really didn't leave cause your right here! Ain't the internet grand!

Mike, I'm married to a Houstonian--- or should I say marred? Anyway, about 11 years ago she had something of an obligation to move back to Houston for family reasons, and I thought I'd give it a whirl as my career had stagnated here in GB.
After a few years the 'family obligation' had passed on if you get my drift, and I'd found out by then that Houston was a, er, ahem, difficult climate to live in-- way too hot and humid for most of the year, boringly flat too, and full of mosquitoes. I literally sweated away at my business building up clientele, scribbling articles, and in the first place kept my eyes open for part-time furniture teaching jobs in the Houston area to help even out the peaks and troughs of self-employment.
No-one was interested in me teaching furniture subjects in Houston as there's really nowhere to teach the subject anyway except at a couple of tool retailers, so I started looking for opportunities elsewhere in the US. Again nobody was interested, except at poor pay, so I cast my net even wider. Suddenly I had three lecturing post interviews at GB colleges or universities on subsequent days. Flew over, got two job offers, and took one.
That sealed it for me. Fate or luck, or whatever, was telling me it was time to move away from Hellston (sic) and back to my roots, so here I am, ha, ha. Slainte.RJFurniture
Yep, 10-4 on the 'Hellston'! Down here if you want something done that requires sweating, you hire it done!
It cost me $30 a week to get the yard mowed. They come in and are out in 30 minutes. Would take me all day and 2 gallons of sweat. Here in my shop I can earn enough to pay for the mowing in less than one hour. Plus, after seeing the job I did compared to what they did, the wife agreed I should have them mow it!
My Purple Martin colony takes care of the mosquitos for 5 months of the year.
Dang, I had a mental note to some day visit your shop!

Richard.. I replied to the email address you gave me a couple months back but it was returned to me as "undeliverable".
Have you another email address I can use to keep you up to date just in case the climate changes or the traffic abates or the construction along Westpark is ever completed?
[email protected]
Cheers!
Bill
Bill, that might have been my old AT&T email address, and that account has now closed. I always make my email address a bit tricky to find, especially on forums, but a bit of clicking about from this post would reveal one. Even after you've done a bit of clicking and found an email address, I still make potential correspondents jump through a hoop or two, ha, ha-- ha, ha, ha. I try to foil web-crawlers, spammers, and other nuisances as much as I can.
Anyway, I'll use the email address you posted in the message I'm replying to and send you a wee note off forum. I bet the work on Westpark will never be completed, ha, ha. Slainte.
Edit. I just tried your email address as posted, and my message was bounced back. I can't see what might be wrong with it, so maybe you could do that bit of clicking I mentioned earlier and send me a note.

Hi, Got it at a place called "Meeks" lumber supply here in Northern Calif. It's made by Zinssner. Go to http://www.zinssner.com for a distributor near you. It's a huge brand. Should be available all over. Great stuff.
Hi Mike,
Our local Ace Hardware ordered a gal for me, they had a extra gal or two but the Ace burned down a few months ago.....Dale
Burned down? Dang, they must have been hot women!!!! (you said "gal")
We do have an ace hardware about 45 minutes away. Will try them.

Hi Brian, I saw your note in the planer thread. As mentioned, no prob with mineral spirits. It's actually safe to wipe down most finishes with.
Glad to hear you like your new planer (yes, I'm jealous). Speaking of pride-and-joys, did you see my collie in the DigiCam thread (Cafe)??
Have fun, work safe!

Thanks everybody!!
FG! For some reason I can't find the pics of your pooch....:(
It's in the Digi-Cam thread, which started here:http://forums.taunton.com/tp-knots/messages?msg=16618.1
The pertinent post is here: http://forums.taunton.com/tp-knots/messages?msg=16618.27
Which will refer you to the movie clip, here:http://home.mindspring.com/~jrae4/Forums/BooVal2.WMV
It's a real short clip! Probably took you longer to read this than the clip lasts, ROFL!! After that, you'll want to read the "What I did today" thread in the Cafe. Shoot, just not working for me. All I get is a gray screen. Well, next time. :(.....
