I purchased a recently built milkpaint cabinet (ie., no more than ten years old) that has a nice patina, but I do not know if it has a finish coat. I want to use this as a bathroom vanity with a vessel sink.
Shall I finish the surface with a water-based polyurethane for protection against the bathroom environment and sinktop use? If so, should I give it a light sanding beforehand and should I finish all surfaces? Or, shall I leave it as is?
thanks,
SH

A little extra protection on the top won't hurt but I don't know if it's absolutely necessary.
I can't tell you from experience if a water based urethane will adhere well but an oil based one would.
If you sand it do so lightly, or use a maroon scotch pad to roughen it a bit. Clean all the dust prior to coating.
Doing the sides is optional.
Good luck.
