Scratching my head trying to understand Taunton Press. I’ve noticed they publish fewer books. I ordered both of Mike’s books from Taunton and was told by letter they were discontinued. You can still get them from Amazon. I went ahead and got from Amazon and EBay. It just seems odd to discontinue a book published in Oct 2021. I won’t buy books on USB sticks that Taunton sells. I hope they are not moving to digital only format.

Yes, I received the same notice today and I’m very disappointed. Well, actually, conflicted better describes how I feel. I too went to Amazon to see if they had copies and found that they do. When I ordered the two books from Taunton I had one of their holiday discounts, which I was excited to get to use, but you cannot use that at Amazon. I had hoped to take Mike’s class in January but ended up not being able to afford it, so was looking at his “Fundamentals” book as the next best thing. I wish they had indicated that supplies were limited. At this point I’m not sure I will buy it.
I'm looking into this and will report back.
This has honestly been the worst shopping experience on the Taunton Store. I ordered Mike's book on Nov 19th, using the 35% off promotion (which was increased to 40% a few days later). Without any shipping info for 2+ weeks, I went on the chat line yesterday - was told to just wait for shipping info when available, no other information is available. If I wanted more information, I needed to call the customer phone line. I called the line, was told that the book is discontinued. When I mentioned that the book is still for sale on the Taunton Store, and can be delivered next day on Amazon, the person on the phone said that I should just buy it on Amazon. I asked for a confirmation on cancellation (before I ordered the book on Amazon), and was told they will send an email in 24-48 hours. I find the content on FineWoodworking to be great. I find the Taunton store is very far from that.
Sorry to hear that user-5881041
It sounds like it's an unfortunate blip. Here is what I have heard back from the Taunton Store people:
"Our Black Friday sale was more successful than we thought and unfortunately that meant some titles went out of stock over the holiday weekend. Because we don’t always know when or if we’ll get more books in stock for any given title, we set them up to automatically cancel any orders that come in after we run out of stock. That’s what triggered the mail notice. We are getting more titles in stock soon and will be sending an email out to anyone whose order was cancelled with a chance to purchase the title (or any other title) again at the same 40% discount. Side note: most of our book sales happen through Amazon, which is why you would see the title still available there since there is much more available inventory. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for bearing with us as we work to get books back in stock at the Taunton Store."
Thanks Ben for getting back to us. I ordered both books from other online retailers at a decent discount after getting the letter. Although not as good as what Taunton store offered I am happy just to be getting them. Thanks again.
Thank you Ben. I look forward to hearing from them. I’ve had other issues with Taunton too. I understand that the publishing industry is challenged in what I’ve been calling “The Information Revolution” (in direct reference to The Industrial Revolution), and especially the magazine sector, but they need to optimize their interactions with their customers. I almost did not renew my ultimate subscription because their online payment system just would not allow the CC processing complete. I’m this current situation, their letter to me clearly said “We are out-of-stock and do not anticipate replenishing.” What they told you indicated that they DO anticipate replenishing, they just don’t know when that might happen.
Please know that many of us subscribers understand your challenges, we appreciate what you are doing to put out such a high quality magazine, and we want to support you. And just so you know, I ended up having to call Taunton to renew my subscription.
Thanks for your help.
I just ordered it through Barnes and Noble, but I would have ordered it direct if possible. For those interested, they are running a 10% off promo but if the 40% becomes available through Taunton that's definitely better.
I did the pre-order through Mike and everything was great. More importantly I really like the book!
Ben, I'm directing this question to you in hopes for a quick response. I much prefer a hardcover or paperback edition over a USB version of a book. I know that searches are easier but I'm well schooled in how to use an index, (my FineWoodworking collection dates back to the early 80's when FineWoodworking published a separate index edition for the year!).
I've noticed many of the titles that are in stock are only available on USB drives. Is this the direction Taunton is taking when restocking or do they intend to restock with actual books? If the answer is USB I'll do my shopping on Amazon now to get a hardcopy while I still can.
That's pretty above my paygrade, but I don't see a time where new titles are offered via USB. Regardless, you should probably buy a dozen or so copies :)

Ah! That is a multimedia collection consisting of articles and videos. There really isn't any other way to offer it other than USB.
Thanks Ben. I deleted my previous comment referring to https://www.tauntonstore.com/gifts-for-woodworkers/michael-pekovich-the-ultimate-collection-volume-2-usb because I realized my mistake and I hoped it would just go unnoticed.
I do notice that some books are offered both as eBooks and hard copy. I just hope the hardcopies stick around for a while, I love books.
Merry Christmas.
I had a similar issue and almost DM'ed my letter to Mike via instagram but figured he already knew or wouldn't see it. Your explanation makes sense Ben but what perplexed me is not only did the letter say they were out of stock but it also included a statement to the effect of "we do not anticipate replenishing our stock of this title." Which seemed surprising for such a popular book.
I think the price has gotten out of control. It's ridiculous to pay that much for a woodworking book. The regular price should be the discounted price.
Just my opinion.
FYI. We've temporarily marked the book as "out of stock" while we do a physical count of what is on hand. If you're antsy, they are in stock on Amazon and other sellers.
I hate, like you, books in electronic format, but I can't do anything with this one. Most of them are in the electronic version now. I recommend you get a tablet with a high-performance screen to not damage your eyes, and to get pleasure from reading. https://phdessay.com/free-essays-on/advertisement-analysis/ explains some data that prove that digital books are less efficient than in the original format. The essay exposes the tendency to make advertisements instead of raising the number of real readers. I felt like you past year when the second volume of my favorite adventure book appeared online only. I was so disappointed. So opt for paper editions as much as you can. Otherwise, I don't see how we can save them.
