Heh all,
My daughter is moving into a new empty house a few hours from me after being exposed to the Southwest furniture arena for many years and much to my chagrin, when I offered to build a few pieces for her, she has decide that she likes Mexican Rustic.
It does have a certain charm but also a lack of quality. (do a search under Mexican Rustic and you will see what I mean.)
Does any one have any reference starting points on some of the construction techniques? ( I know, “start with an apple crate, some bent nails..”)
I was thinking Mesquite and she’s thinking pine..big price difference.
Seriously – Books, woods, hardware sources, techniques to make it look rough but well built underneath etc.
I’ve never tried to make anything bad before from the get go. I have built bad pieces but not with that intent when I started 🙂
Any thoughts out there?
Thanks
BB

boiler,
ever get down to mexico? the rustic furniture i've seen in nogales,t.j.,mexicali and ensenada is some pretty nice stuff. the construction is honest yet simple mortise & tenon, rabbets, miters and the like. the finish is deliberately stressed, though not all of the time. you daughter is correct, it's mostly made from pine. i kind of like it. there is quite a bit of it around, here in los angeles.
