I have asked this before, but as I’ve seen only minimal change, it bears repeating. Please, guys and gals, just type your posts in the default font size. About half the posts come accross in teeny, tiny type, that I can’t read even with my glasses on. If I expand it on the screen (<ctl>+) to where I can read it, the next post shows up huge and I need to shrink it down, only to have to blow up the one after that.
There is really NO justification for tiny type. Your words will still fit into your post. It just makes things more difficult for us older types, especially when we have additional, hopefully temporary, eye problems like I am going through right now.
A little bit of consideration will go a long way!

Hi Lee. I haven't seen the "teeny/tiny" sydrome for awhile. Do ya think maybe it's, generally speaking, a newbie who's still getting used to the forum that makes this mistake? I'd like to think (or at least hope) that it's not a case of someone being inconsiderate so much as clueless, given the nature of the Prospero boards.
Hope your weather has been better than ours!

At least one or two people have mentioned they compose their messages in WORD, and then cut/paste them into the reply window here. Could that be part of the problem?
I've noticed the same thing you're talking about. I keep my font size so big here I can practically read it from across the room. And in some cases I have to make a particular message smaller, otherwise it runs off the screen.
I have a Mac, so I don't have any of the formating options the Windows people have available to them.
So I guess that makes me innocent of any wrong doing, at least in this respect..... ...............................
I haven't seen the threads Lee was referring to, I guess. That thing about composing in Word and copying to here has always mystified me. Don't understand what leads someone to go through that hassle. The only thing I can't think of is maybe they've been victim of the "disappearing post" thing. It's easy enough to "Ctrl+A" [select all] and "Ctrl+C" -- copy the pending post to the clipboard just in case.
Your posts always read fine for me, so near as I can tell everything's cool there.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
The argument I was given:
If you keep a WORD file of all your posts, then you can just reach back and copy/paste your replies to some of the topics that keep coming up again, and again, and again.
Not a bad idea in some respects, but kind of defeats the concept of a forum, I would think.
Just go to the bottom of the thread and adjust the font size for YOU to what you want. Mine is set at 10. It will set the entire thread to what you want.Gretchen
I do that too, but he's right that some posts nonetheless come through smaller (or larger) than others.
I set my font size large (14-16), which means I can read them all, even those with smaller type size. But the problem is that some of them will then run off the frame.
I also wonder why that is so. Does that mean the poster is diddling with the format settings (for type size) when they compose their reply?
>> Just go to the bottom of the thread and adjust the font size ...
Doesn't work on my computer. The CTRL combination somebody suggested doesn't work either. It takes me six mouse clicks at widely separated locations on the screen to change font size.
Ahhh, OK, I see. I have a different approach. If there's a thread I know will come in handy in the future, I bookmark it and give it a title that means something to me. Kept in a folder called "Knots Responses." Of course, that's on the old computer now. Have to do some transferring. :-)forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Do you use your browser's "bookmark" (Mozilla) or "favorites" (IE) function?
Can you bookmark entire threads, just by bringing up the first reply in the thread?
Can you bookmark a specific reply within a thread?
I would like to figure out some better system to keep track of info I might want to retrieve in the future, and your suggestion might just do the trick.
For instance, I started the "aching feet" thread a few days ago, and some of the replies were especially helpful. Lacking a better system, I just made a print copy of those I wanted to keep.
On another subject, I am still having a terrible time getting the search function to work for me. I don't know what the protocol is when new, unrelated topics are brought up in the midst of a thread. Don't they call that "hijacking?"
Re: the original question here, Lee never did get an answer that explains the difference in font size among posts. Is this a "Sysop" issue?
re: font size
See, for example, 18003.4 (from rick3ddd, post #5, Cabinet Saw Mobile Base thread, under "General Discussion").
I just read through this thread (8 posts), and they were all the same font size on my machine. However, the post above ran off the edge of the frame -- and I either had to reduce the font size (apple -- or control -- +), or pull out the screen to a wider width.
I am curious to know how this particular post appeared on other machines.
I checked that message number, and it was fine for me - same font size as the others, and didn't roll off the right edge. I did note it's the only post in that thread with bold underlining. Maybe some browsers are struggling with the Prospero/html?
Did this message cause you the same issue?

Strange..........
There is just one sentence in this reply that my machine picks up as bold and underscored:
" The HTC has knobs over the wheels but I added some knobs with longer treaded rods so I didn't have to bend over."
And then when I cut/paste here, I lose this bold/underscored formating. And, when I just went over to that thread to check this reply (18003.1), it still runs off the page.
I'm a real dunce when it comes to the vagaries of computers.

Right, that's the only bold and underlined sentence - I didn't mean to imply otherwise, sorry. It was just the one thing that set it apart - here on my screen it shows it at the same width as all the others in that thread.

At the bottom of each message is an "Options" thing. If you hover your mouse over it, you'll get a list of options, one of which is to "Bookmark this page." It bookmarks the message you've selected there. I give each message a title that means something to me, like "How to bookmark posts".
Drop me a line if you want, and I'll help you work on the search thing. If the topic-police are out they might bust us for hijacking, LOL.
I don't think Lee was asking a question so much as letting some of us know we're causing a certain amount of grief and reminding us to watch our formatting. He's been around for awhile, so the board isn't a mystery to him as far as I know.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
re: bookmarks and the options thing.
Here we go with strange again.............
The "Options" thing you mention does not have a "bookmark" choice for me. The chioices are 1) email this message, 2) ignore this author, 3) add to friends, 4) print message, and 5) report violation.
I imagine this is still one more feature available to all of you in the Windows world, but denied to those of us on Macs.
Could very well be the Mac thing. Sorry, I can't help ya there! The other option (with Windows) is that you can right-click the title of a thread, select "Open in New Window" and get the thread only in the new window (no frame on the left side). If there's some way to do that with the Mac, you could then bookmark that page.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
I feel like I'm getting dumber by the minute.
I tried the right click on "options" -- and it's all there, just as you said.
Thanks for your patience.
I have two mid-teen grandchildren, and I think I'll get them up here this weekend to give me a private seminar on basic navigation..............
EDIT: But then again................
Turns out the right click displays the bookmark option, but unfortunately it doesn't work, at least for me.

Nope. I believe that the full list is available by "hovering" ONLY to those using Internet Explorer. Others can access the full list by right clicking.
However, the "advanced formatting options" in the compose function are only available to IE users. I use Netscape 7.1 (the latest version) and have the exact same choices as you do on your Mac. I choose Netscape because of serious security problems with the various incarnations of IE.
Frankly, I think it's poor policy (Are you listening, Taunton?) to cater to primarily one browser when so many others are in use (Mac, Linux, Netscape, etc). I'd much rather see fewer "toys" that only work on IE, and instead enjoy a more consistent implementation that WORKS THE SAME ACROSS ALL PLATFORMS.
The use of various fonts and sizes is absolutely not necessary to getting one's point across on this forum. All it does is cause some of us, like myself, whose eyesite is, permanently or temporarily, handicapped, a fair amount of grief.
Thank you, FG, for your comments. Yes, I have been here for awhile, and the ways of computers are pretty well known to me, having made my living with them for most of my adult life, since long before PC's came out. I don't claim to know everything, but I can hold my own.
I started dealing directly with computers at my first job fresh out of the US Air Force in 1967 in the engineering lab at Dalmo-Victor Corp. I was first introduced to the IBM PC when only IBM employees had them, for BETA testing, and none of them had hard disk drives. But, you know, I'll be the first to admit that this long history can sometimes work against me, when I'm still thinking in "old ways" and the newest generation buzzes right past me.

re: "advanced formatting options"
Our trusty "syops" explained in another thread that this feature is available only to those using IE with a Windows system.
As for hovering over the option label on replies and right clicking, I did try it using Mozilla; the choices are displayed, but they don't work. I haven't yet tried this with IE.
I imagine that many are playing with the advanced formatting options, not knowing how all this reads for people using various systems. On the other hand, whyever would Prospero make options available that screw up things for others? Maybe its a glitch they are unaware of.
It could be that posters are concerned about the number of minutes to type while online. They may be paying by the minute for dial-up and compose while off-line.(:-)

Do people still pay by the minute for internet access???
HOly smokes?
Yup-
Mostly people that are rarely on, like for maybe an hour or two a month. They might pay $10 or so.(:-)

I honestly don't know what you are talking about.
Well, on my machine the font size of your message is smaller than the previous message in the thread (mine). Yours is still large enough to be read ok, but on some posts, the type size is teeny-tiny, and has to be blown up.
We have been wandering around in this thread trying to figure out why all that is so. and we haven't yet found the answer....................
