Dear Re,
I am from around Washington, DC so I don't know your area. My suggestion is just to get on Google, and type in something like
"buy hardwood Idaho,Washington and Oregon" or put in a city name in the place of those state names. Try some different word combinations. Try the word lumbermill in the phrase. Be creative. After a few minutes, I'll bet you'll find a bunch.
If you try this and cannot find anything, let me know, and I'll do it for you. All I would need would be the names of the Cities that you are near.
Have fun.

Measure your output in smiles per board foot.
A bit of a trek from where you describe, but if you might check out Jensen Hardwood Lumber Company, 312 Artesia Avenue in Walla Walla. I thought prices near home (in Portland, OR) were a bit better, but my relatives nearby (Pasco, WA) shop there often and have made some nice projects with the wood.

I live in Western WA. Two or three great hardwood places in Seattle area, but that's a crazy-long drive for you. I'd suggest that you look up cabinetmakers in the phone book and give 'em a call. Although they probably buy more plywood than anything, they still might know of some hardwood sources.
forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Take a look at Goby walnut http://www.gobywalnut.com they have some great looking stuff. I have also bought some nice walnut on e-bay from an outfit called antlerexpress (I think thats the spelling) and have been pleased with what I purchased they are in Oregon so you might take a look there.
