I have a shiffer robe that was originally shellaced. It is probably over 60 years old possibly much older. It has book matched burl veneer doors and drawers in walnut. The renovation isn’t priced high enough for reveneering but I have to replace broken and missing burl veneer about 3/8 ” from the edge on each piece. Any suggestons? Should I fudge it and paint in the burl?

Charlie,
If you can find burl similar to what's on the drawer fronts, it might be possible to patch out the missing bits. Burl grain is so irregular, that an irregularly edged patch is pretty inconspicuous. It's fairly time consuming to match the grain pattern, and do a neat job of cutting in, and cleaning up, though. On a piece with limited value, you might consider routing the edges all round, and putting a veneer or inlay banding in the recess.

Maybe I can find some old walnut burl veneer around somewhere, if so I will try that. Thanks for the sugestion.
