Makita LS 1013 vs Bosch 4410 Sliding Mit
Hi again
I’ve narrowed it down to the Makita and Bosch 10″ sliders. Many folks have said many great things about both. I have seen a few comments that teh Makita gets sloppy after a while in the bevel and detents. while I’m not planning on beating up the tools I’d like to see if anyone has found this a big problem
Thanks again

Steve,
Easy again, nope. And I use mine a bunch. I just built a big gazebo, which of course had about a gazillion compound angle cuts, and before that a years worth of beds, dressers, bookcases, cabinets, picture frames, and a secretary looking pie safe, zero complaints. In fact, I'd say its the most trouble free tool I've got. Really nice blade comes with it too. You won't regret it when you eventually bring it home. I researched for a month before I brought mine home. Don't just go buy the numbers, see if you can find a couple to fool with in person. I was going to buy the Dewalt before I tried the Makita and it out. No comparison between those two. I bet if you do a side by side, one or the other will jump out at ya and say, buy me!
I'm sure the Bosch is a nice tool too, though I haven't tried it, but cripes those colors are awful. Enjoy the new saw!
Theres a special on the 1212 (12" version), free impact driver with mail in rebate when you buy. But now the Dewalt has a 3 year warranty as of jan first 2004. with the 1013 (10" model) 14.4 volt cordless drill.

If it were the 12" I'd say the Bosch. hands down, but since you want a 10" look into the Milwaukee 10" SCMS. That is one squared away piece of equipment. Better than either of the other two.

WOW!!! What a Ride!
Hard for me to believe how good my Makita is. Just simply a pleasure to use every time I pull the trigger.

i'm not hard on my makita ls1013, but i am picky. as i type this (one handed hunt & peck, of course) i'm holding a small chunk of crappy pressure treated yellow pine baluster for a new deck stair rail that i cut yesterday on this saw. i brought it in the house just to show my wife how well that saw works- the cut face looks polished. i own probably half a dozen or so forrest blades, but i wouldn't replace this makita blade with one! and obviously, a blade can't cut like that if the saw isn't solid.

Steve,
All I can say is that I've used the Makita for all kinds of work, and it has performed flawlessly. I use the blade that came with it. It is superb. I've used it to saw off very expensive gunstocks when doing modifications, and the cuts are perfect with no tearout.

Steve, for what it is worth I am also trying to decide between these 2 scms. Last week I visited my local tool store (7 corners in St. Paul) and they said that 80% of the SCMSs that they sell are the 1013. The saw has held up well over the years and they recommend it highly. With that said I have to admit I think I am going to purchase the Bosch 4410. I like the upfront controls along with the general build of the saw. I should tell you that 7 corners said they were seeing problems with the 12 inch Bosch. The lock that controls the handle positioning tends to not lock tightly and the depth adjustment control slips. I should tell you that after speaking with builders who use the new Bosch regularly they have not seen any of these problems and highly recommend it. If you get the opportunity let me know what you decide and we can compare notes. Bill
Steveworks,
I used to own the Bosch 10" SCMS. I sold it after I bought a Festool system, but the Bosch was absolutely fantastic. I used it lots of times over a period of about three years, and it always performed wonderfully.
Before I purchased the Bosch, I checked out 10" models by DeWalt, Makita, Freud, Milwaukee, and others. For me, the Bosch came out on top.
One bonus about the Bosch -- the stock blade. The other saws all come with a cheap blade that you have to replace right away. But the Bosch comes with their "Platinum" series blade, which is great. I used it for about two years before I finally replaced it. I'm not sure if Bosch still includes this blade with their saw, but if so, figure this into your cost comparisons. This gives about a $75 credit to Bosch.
Matthew,
You should try the blade that comes with the Makita 1013. Excellent. Read the above posts and see how many agree with me.Steve
Steve,
OK, good point. So, now we know that the Bosch and the Makita both come with good blades. The quality of the stock blade is a factor in your decision, if price is a concern. A good blade puts $60 to $75 in favor of one saw over another.
But I admit, it's a tough call. The Makita and the Bosch are both nice saws.
Size does matter. Don't screw around with a 10", go with the Mak LS1212. I've never been sorry I had too much saw especially when I take it to a job. The size and weight difference is negligiable, the extra cutting capacity isn't. I've notched 2x12 stair stringers with it. Mine spends most of time set up with 6' tables w/ stops on both sides. The tables' fences are 3/4 MDF and attach to the stock fence so I can zero the tapes for the stops. Even so, the 12 has more capacity than a 10 w/o a 3/4 thick fence. I put ergonomics way behind accuracy, capacity and power. I thought the linear bearings were best on the Hitachi's and the Makitas. I didn't like the stock blade though. It was a thin kerf and deflected (slightly) when I was cutting compound scarfs in 3/4 x 5 beech base I milled for my house. I replaced it with an FS Tools 100t HD miter blade and have been very pleased. When I put the new blade on it and checked the runout it was about .014 so I lapped the flange washers on a glass plate and got it down to .006". The cuts are glass smooth.
