I recall reading an article years ago about making belts for a belt sander but do not recall the type of tape that was used to make the angled butt joint. Has anyone done this?

I just bought 80 high quality 4 by 24 belts on Ebay for around 60 dollars with shipping. I got 20 each of 4 different grits, at these prices it does not pay to try making your own belts. The raw materials would probably cost almost as much as the finished product.
