Hello all,
I’ve started kicking around the idea of making a chessboard out of some of the scraps I’ve got laying around.
I’m thinking of approximately 1.5″ squares. I’m concerned about wood movement possibly causing the squares to pop.
I have a basic picture in my mind right now, which I will probably try to sketch out tonight, but was wondering if anyone has advice or general tips they can give me.
Thanks in advance.

SBerruezo,
Not suggestions, just personal experiences. I built one a few years ago from walnut and maple, actually a case with checkerboard top, it was a lot of fun.
I made my top 1/2" and splined it into the sides. It looked a tad thin and I became concerned about strength, so I backed it up with a floating piece of plywood. I'd like to try it again making the top 3/4" and no ply.
We just discussed chessboards a few weeks ago, do a search in the old messages, I think you'll find some usefull stuff there.

If you go to DIY network online you can check out the chessboard David Marks made. He has some nice tricks you may want to try. The board he made is beautiful.
Good luck, Jim
