   If you use stain use special walnut it has a nice look to it.  Also, oils work great on mahogany especially Waterlox.  Let me know if you want me to post you a pic or two with special walnut on it.

   Thanks, that would be great. I usually don't stain mahogany because of its great natural color, but I'd like to see the walnut...

   Awesome...I'm going to try it. I see ac an of Minwax in the pic. Is that the brand of special walnut? And then you apply Waterlox on top?

   No Waterlox at all.  When I was learning to do this piece I didn't know about oils or varnishes.  About 6 coats of that stain was used and then topped with lacquer to protect it.  The brand was Minwax.  I know now that a good wood like Mahogany doesn't need stain but it really jumps out at you.

   I'd be inclined to use spar varnish or Waterlox Marine. Spar varnish won't level and rub out like regular varnish; it's too soft, but that also makes it better able to deal with expansion and contraction from the moisture. If you wanted to make it really water resistant you could encapsulate it in epoxy - you'd still have to varnish over top and it would get to look like those plastic coated bar tables.
