One of the local saw mills around here shut down over two years ago, but they still have a large assortment of lumber in the yard that they didn’t sell. It is a mix of oak, ash, maple, and others. It is very grey and I can’t tell what some of it is.
What value does this wood have? It is still solid, no rot on the stuff I looked at. I took a piece of the maple home and ran it through the planer and it came out beautiful. There are end and surface checks, but not too bad.
It ranges from 6′ to 16′ in length, and 4/4 to 8/4+ in thickness. After the two plus years I figure it is all pretty well dry.
The owner wants me to buy it all, as he is moving. I don’t know what it is worth, or if I could afford all of it. (5,000+ feet) Any suggestions on what I should offer him? Also if anyone is interested in any of it, let me know.

Where are you? You'll probably get a few takers on this if the price is right. If it were me, I'd line up a few people who want some of the wood and make the guy an offer of $2-3/board ft for everything.
I'd be a bit careful here. If the wood was never kiln dried, and has sat outside for 2 years, then it may well be buggy, which will require kiln drying in order to kill the bugs. Also, if it is below 12% MC I would be surprised. I would be thinking in terms of about $1 per b.f., or less, since you will have to move it, stcker it, dry it, etc. I wouldn't buy it at all unless you have a kiln operator ready to take it in.
I had an opportunity for about this amount, and declined it, and then "brokered" its sale for $500 (about 6000b.f. of cherry, w.o., walnut, ash, r.o., and butternut. (No commission, of ocurse, just a favor to both a friend, and the seller, an estate, who had sold the property and needed it gone quickly.) I think most of this wood was rescure wood, as it was all sawn through the tree. Some wide, some thick, all buggy, some beautiful, some firewood.
Good luck, whawtever you decide.

The lumber is located in Northwest PA. I'd be glad to post pictures, or take anyone there to see it.
The owner of the property called me last night and said that he has sold the property, and needs to have the lumber gone by August 11. Any takers at $1.00 per foot?

wher in N.W. pa is it??
This lumber is located near Kane, PA. About 2.5 hours north of Pittsburgh, 1.5 hours south of Erie, 3 hours East of Cleveland.
Hi
I live near New Kensington PA (32 miles NE of Pittsburgh) and saw your add. The lumber sounds like a steal but right now I have no room left to store. You mentioned that "one" of the local saw mills shut down and I was wondering if there are others in you area. Around here they are getting really hard to find. I would really appreciate and lead on mills. TIA Pat
I can probably arrange for outdoor storage approximately 8 miles from the mill. Just need to transport. There are plenty of mills up here. Send me an e-mail as to the info you are looking for.
