What is the best lubricant for a flex-shaft tool? I’ve seen references to lithium and molybdenum, and if it’s a toss-up, I’d choose the one that handles heat better. I may have overtaxed the Foredom when cutting metal; faint smell of burning rubber.

The best lubricant is probably the one that the manufacturer recommends. While moly-based greases generally have higher working temperatures than lithium-based greases, I find it hard to imagine how you could be exceeding the working temperature of a lithium-based grease (around 300°F) in a handheld tool.

Steve,Thank you. Foredom recommends a "high-quality, white lubricating grease," but describing the grease by color instead of by composition didn't give me enough information. Molybdenum was mentioned--frequently--on a forum for Dremel users. From you said about working temperature, molydenum is probably overkill for their purposes. But I guess it does no harm, either.Janet
"White" grease generally means lithium grease.

I didn't know that! Thank you.JanetP.S.
Bought a tube of white lithium grease at Sears. I still think it strange that Foredom would choose to describe it as "white" instead of "lithium"--particularly since the grease turned out to be beige.

Janet..
No expert on the subject but I use (GUNK) Liquid Wrench Industrial Chain Lube.. WITH MOLY!
AND I can get it at the local ACE? hardware store... At a resonable cost.
I use a old bucket and put the wound shaft into it and spray away untill it is really wet and covered.. I let it sit overnight in the mess.. The next day I wipe off the excess with a lint free cloth and away I go!
