Along the lines of the previous posting about a soon-to-be turner, I am looking to begin myself as well. I am looking to buy a machine soon, and my budget for the machine would be 300 dollars or under. What machine would you all suggest as a good buy?

Hello Jasen, I just recently picked up a Rikon Model 70-100 Mini lathe from Woodcraft. I got it on sale for $199.00 with it's regular price being $249.00. I also got their stand for it which usually I build my own stand if I have the time but opted for getting theirs. The stand is actually pretty stout. I picked that particular one first off because I do not have the room for a full sized lathe and secondly it was picked as overall winner from FWW a few months back. I haven't had a chance to do much on it yet but it does run smooth.

I read that same review about the Rikon, and it was thinking it would be the most likely buy. So it is a good machine huh?
"my budget for the machine would be 300 dollars or under. " I got a very nice used Jet lathe for $250, cruising Craig's list. Not a mini -- not huge either, but "just right." Used lathes seem to come up on a regular basis, so you might be able to get far more machine than you expect for your $300. [came with a set of Delta turning tools]

Hi Jamie, I'm also thinking of a midi-lathe but if I could get a bigger model for a good price used why not? My question is how much did the shipping cost?
Staying dry up there? We got hit hard today.

"how much did the shipping cost?" It was the cost of gas. I found that lathe on Craig's list, in a small burg just about 20 miles from us, out in the country sorta. Craig's list http://www.craigslist.org has been very, very good to me this past year. That lathe, $250 (was an estate thing, where the couple had bought it for her dad's birthday ages ago, and he recently died); an RBI Hawk scroll saw ($125); an "extra" Steel City bench-top mortiser for $125 (sold it to a friend for $200 or somethin' like that); a Stanley #7; and today I picked up a couple extra pieces for my Roybi 1+ set at about 30% of new, which they were.
Have passed on an old Unisaw and a few other tools I just wasn't ready for. Beats eBay all to heck for some stuff, LOL.
None of it comes close to the $5 for the Inca saw, though -- Rotary fundraising rummage sale. Wow! Find of a lifetime, I still pinch myself (all the way to the bank, ka-ching).
It has rained quite a bit the last several days. At least it isn't as cold as it was a few weeks ago! California is getting an arctic blast -- ouch! I am certified done with winter, but Mother Nature doesn't seem to care. At least the days are getting longer again!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I cannot believe I have NEVER checked out Craigs list. That's next.
Hey I fixed my own planer today! Definitely saved a bunch of money doing it too. Broken sprocket. K..it was probably a fairly easy fix but it has boosted my confidence in another aspect of woodworking.
Oh, if you haven't already seen it, check out my post about DC on my router table when you get a chance. Would appreciate any advice.
See ya, Brian
That's for the Graig's list tip. I wouldn't have considered that as an option.
