Folks,
I am looking for a parts source to a 15″ SA-380E Planer. The model number seems to be that of the Taiwanese manufacturer. The importer I purchased this from was Transpower (big mistake). The company seemed to be in transition when I made the purchase, I had shipping problems from the start, and they seemed to go out of business right after I purchased the machine. I have since learned to stick with known importers, such as Grizzly. On the up side I just had my first serious problem with the machine in 15 years.
This weekend I put out several e-mails to current importers of the SA-380E but I thought I would ask here to see if anyone knows of a source of parts. I broke the main drive sprocket to the feed roller system.
Thanks,
Dean

Dean, try downloading a parts list from Grizzly or another maker of Taiwanese planers. You may be able to find the same size sprocket. Also check the yellow pages under Power Transmission, they carry sprockets , chains etc.

Dean,
If you can locate the parts, replace the chain and all of the sprockets at the same time.
Given the age of the machine, the chain and remaining sprockets are probably wearing out and an old chain won't seat properly in the new sprocket, leading to excess wear of both the chain and the new sprocket. Replacing them all as a set will save trouble in the future.

There are lots of places here in the USA that sell sprockets of all different shapes and sizes. With any luck, yours will be on their shelves. Might take a bit of Google'ing to find them. The cheapest ones will be sintered metal. That's what I used when I made my overhead sander and they have worked well. But, my application is very low stress.
You will need to get yours out and take all pertinent measurements, in order to match up.

Dear Stevicks,
If the planer is a Delta copy, there's a good chance that the Delta sprocket part fits it. Also, Grizzly made copies as such, and most parts were the same. Delta/Rockwell original planers were 13" in lieu of 15" planers.
So, even Grizzly could have the part. A local tool seller that sells similar import planers might also lead to a solution. Grizzly has on-line manuals, at their web site. See if you find one that looks like yours. Even if not the same looks, it could have practically the same guts.
Good luck.
Don't know if you live around a good farm equipment dealer, but they all carry weld together hubs and sprockets. Some auto parts chains do to. Pretty much build anything you need that way, and ditto what JohnW said about changing the chain and other sprockets too.
Did you ever get an answer to finding the gear for the transpower planer? I am experienceing the same problem and am not finding a solution to findinig gear. My home phone number is 616-994-0447. Please Help!!!
