Peter,
I’m making a frame and panel construction bed frame and am using flame cherry for the head and foot board panels – incredible grain patterns! I am prefinishing the panels before putting the whole thing together. In order to pop the grain, I applied 3 coats of boiled linseed oil first to the panels and let sit about 24 hours between coats. Shop temp is a stable 68F and 35% RH. In order to provide more protection to the panels, I’m applying satin sheen wiping poly. However, between coats I am noticing a lot of very small shiny spots on the panels. I have about 3 coats of poly on so far and sanded with p320 between each coat. The finish looks terrible. Could this be oil coming out of the pores? If so, how do I correct this problem?
HELP!
Thanks,
Pat

Hi Pat,
When you applied the oil; was it minimal or did you flood it on? If you used it liberally, thorough wiping down a few times is required. Popping the grain with the oil could have been done with one application. With that many coats of oil, I think letting it sit for at least a week would have been prudent.
What type of poly did you use? Is it water or oil based?
It sounds to me what you are getting are little " hot spots" where the oil is forcing it's way out.
Without seeing the surface it's hard to give you exact advice but a couple of things to consider would be;
Sand the poly as thin as you can without really going through to the wood. Then give it a good rubbing down with a maroon scotch pad. Apply a thin coat of SealCoat ( dewaxed blonde shellac) to the surface and when dry sand lightly. This will isolate any problems. You could then apply your poly again.
My first choice would be to remove the poly, wash the surface with some mineral spirits and dry. Let it sit for a few days and then I would then apply the shellac in a thin coat or two to seal the surface, sand lightly when dry and proceed with the poly if you wish.
I know it's extra work, but........... Finishing is a learning curve.
Let me know what you decide to do.
Peter
