All,
Lie- Nielsen will be in Chicago this weekend and I’ll be looking at their hand saws, specifically the Tenon Saws. I would like to know if anyone has used them and if they are the 12″ or the 14″. I have never really used a quality saw before, so I don’t have anything to compare it too. I would like to get a matching pair of Tenon Saws, but would like to hear both good and bad on LN’s cross cut and rip saws. By the way I don’t really need the 14″ but I’ve always been a bigger is better type of guy, because ya never know.

Roc,
Thanks for the food for thought. Was that thread from this year?

Jay,I have both a 12" Tenon crosscut and a 14" Tenon rip cut, and absolutely love them. I intentionally bought them in different lengths for easy identification when working since I naturally associate rip cuts as longer cuts.
Never thought in that direction, neat idea. Do you find that your 14" the same balance as the 12"?

The balance is great on both saws but there is big difference in weight. The 12" weighs 13 oz., but the 14" weighs 22 oz. because the 14" is not only 2" longer but also 5/8" taller. Also I have found that the crosscut saw will rip without problems, but if you try to crosscut with the rip saw, it objects and you definitely know you have the wrong saw.If you are looking for a matched set, the 12 & 14 may not be to your liking, but in daily use, I enjoy the difference in the look and feel of the two saws.By the way, I also absolutely love my LN "progressive cut" dovetail saw.
I planned on taking a look at the LN's dovetail saws as well, although not in my budget this time around. $700.00 sure goes fast in this hobby.

I have both. They are excellent saws. I have been quite pleased with both.

Thanks for responding Jeff, I was hoping you would chime in. Sorry to hear you won't be able to make the show at Jeff Miller's.

I hope the show is a good one. Due to all the rain, I was going to go anyway, but I came down with a nasty sinus infection yesterday, so my feet are up, my robe is on, and I'm just gonna watch a bunch of hockey games this weekend, and nurse myself back to health.
Punch Jeff in the arm for me, and tell him its from me, but not too hard! He's getting kind of skinny.

If I remember correctly, you were not feeling well last year either, hope you don't have a touch of the H1N1. I"ll give you a report tomorrow on the show.

Jeff,
I arrived at the show at 12:10, it started at noon and there were already (22) people there. Tom Nielsen (himself) and Bridge City were not present, however Chris Schwarz and a few other demos were going on. I was there (2) hours and it was hard to walk around by the time I left.
After spending a good amount of time with the saws, I settled on the 12" cross and rip tenon saws. I really liked the 14"ers but I have a 10 year old that has really taken a liking to making saw dust and he was able to handle the 12", so I will live with them for now. One of the things that I purchased was a small block plane in my 10 year olds name and asked if Tom could include a short hand written note for his first plane. Getting another generation interested should help Tom with his furture residual income.
Hope your feeling better,
Jay

Jay,
I not only got the Lie Nielsen saws and planes, but more importantly, I got a set of their temporary tattoos. If you are going to the show, be sure to wear one of those tattoos. You can find them on the LN website. Five bucks for a set.

Mel,
I don't rememer seeing your hand saws when I out in DC, but I do remeber that little rabbit plane which is on my list to get. I bet your the first person in your neighborhood to sport a Lie-Nielsen tat.

Jay,
I only bought one set of the LN tattoos, so I wear them judiciously.

Jay,
Good talking to you today. Let me know what happens when you meet Tom Lie Nielsen and Chris Schwarz and the gang. Let me know how the shindig goes. I am jealous. MelMeasure your output in smiles per board foot.
