My step father left me with a #5 Bailey Jack Plane. I’m in the process of tuning this baby up and have run across the lever cap lower edge, where it meets the cap iron, having about a 1/4″ of length chipped out. The chips are about 1/16″ deep.
Can some one suggest some on line resources for a replacement? I am looking for a second hand quality part. If not available, then where can I pick up new parts?
Thanks

Senor,
E-bay has lots of Stanley/Bailey parts. A #5 lever cap should set you back more for shipping than the actual purchase. They are very common, especially if you are not particular about the vintage. Lee Valley or Highland Hdwr. has new replacement parts. They both have web sites to explore (have fun!).

Thanks Mackwood. After I posted this message, I Googled Bailey Planes and checked out this site: http://www.antique-used-tools.com These are all vintage parts, no reproductions, and he's offering free shipping if you are in the continental US. Have you or anyone else heard of him? Senor Dorado
Senor,
I've gone to the tag sales at Tod's farm in Rowley (1A)on Sunday mornings and bought some old clunker for parts. Also, the big auction in Nashua in the fall and spring...bought a box of 6 for $50..
It's always good to have extra handles and knobs, blades, etc.
Hey BG, I'm thinking Nashua New Hampshire, correct? What is the name of the fair? Is there a website for further info? Senor Dorado
Senor,Here ya go.... http://www.mjdtools.com/
and in the parking lot is about 50 or so vendors with tons of user stuff.
Is Saturday or Sunday better? Is the main action in the parking lot? ThanksDoug

GDH2,
Actually, Friday morning is the best official time to hit the parking lot, however some say Thursday night is when the real deals go down between vendors. I've never done Thursday night..I look for users tools, the dealers like to get rid of user tools. The auction is Friday morning and Saturday...by noon I believe it's all over on Saturday.
BG Thanks for the link up. Never been to one these auctions, ought to be a real treat. Later Senor Dorado
Senor,
The first times a killer....toys all over the place...
Have bought planes and parts from Bob...good guy...good service...Jimmy
Senor,
Bob Kaune is one of the giants of tool collecting! He's written the best type study on Bedrocks that I've run across (I don't claim to have read everything on the subject). I met him and did business with him once many years ago and found him to be down to earth and sincere. I would not hesitate to buy parts from him.

Thanks for the feed back Mack, I'll be getting back to Bob K. shortly. He's got a lever cap for the #5 Jack Plane for $19.95, shipping included. Keep a cool Breeze Senor Dorado
Senor,
If you're not particular about the vintage of the lever cap and you're not in a hurry, I'll bet you could find a decent lever cap on E-bay with a plane attached to it for good measure for the same money.
I'm not trying to discourage you from dealing with Bob but IMHO his parts are selected and priced for the collector who needs a particular vintage piece in top condition.
Just my 2c worth--
