You may want to forget the letter knife I posted here last week. Although it was a nice knife (if you had murder on your mind), it was nothing like a real letter knife. Since it was to be a birthday present for my brother, I decided to make another one.
Below is the new letter knife – it is VERY different to the original – together with the presentation box I built for it. The box is designed to open on a desk and provide easy access to the knife. My brother will use it.
The only part that I have not yet completed is the “holder” for the knife. I had something in mind similar to the holder for the brace I posted a short while ago…. mini stands … but I thought to angle the knife at about 30 degrees off the horizontal (i.e. downward). What do you think? I welcome your ideas for this area.
The other feedback I’d appreciate is where to place an inscription. I thought to have the blade inscribed. The alternative is a brass plate on the box.
Here’s the box. It was coopered out of Jarrah …
The box flips open …
(this is, as mentioned, without the holder)
And a few close ups. Reminder – the blade was a Stanley plane blade. The handle is She-oak.
I plan to do a pictorial on all for the FWW blog.

Derek - Much improved. That's a knife that I think you'll be proud to give as a gift.
If you can afford it, you might choose to have the blade laser-engraved. I'm not sure what it would cost to have someone do a one-off laser engraving, but because you're essentially printing a picture on steel with the laser, you could do something very nice with acanthus leaves & a cartouche for the name by just drawing it or lifting it from a pattern book. Getting "real" engraving by traditional means done on that level would cost thousands.
Nicely executed, Mr. C.
Derek,
I like the way that the conical handle directs your sight towards the blade. Nice. Don't use that knife to commit murder: the cops would take it away.

derek,
I dunno but I just think that box would lose something if you add anything to it - just me I guess. As far a some sort of cradle, again I think maybe a slight depression kinda shaped for just the handle but kept simple. If the top opens easily the knife probably won't rolll out and across his desk anyway if that's what you are concerned about.
As to engraving well I'd suggest you do it. That way it's all from you. That coopered top adds just the right umph to the whole ensemble (sp?). Just my thoughts. I really like it a lot just the way it is.

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
Again, beautifully done. The only problem I see is that the stationary to be opened would need to be of superior quality to most!
I agree with Bob K. re the box.
As for an inscription,I think I'd go for a brass plaque with its own wee mount on your brother's side of the blade.[front?]

Many thanks for all your comments so far. They are much appreciated.Well, for better or worse, the box is completed and the knife is inscribed. Here's the box (again) ...View ImageAnd here is the presentation ...View ImageView ImageRegards from PerthDerek
Derek, once again, you've proven your brilliance. You completed the box just as I would have done. ;-)
Derek,he's got to love that!
Great work.

Hey,WG.
Thank you for that link. Isn't that just the most brilliant version of that old song?
I smiled [broadly,I rather fancy, had I been able to see myself] to see the old shellac disc spin.I have that version on a 45 rpm vinyl,so you're older than I..!!! [I know it's not your disc, but nobody knows that!] :-)
There's ANOTHER use for shellac, too, that I'd forgotten about when it appeared in these and related threads recently. Is there no end to that little critter's usefullness?
No doubt about DC tho', some sort of craftsman,is he not?
