Anyone have any experience with Lee Valleys Bullnose plane?
It would seem to me it would work nicely for paring post blocks to the point where the knee on a cabriole leg meets the block.
Seems like a versatle plane. Any suggestions as to other uses for this type of plane. I’m curious as to how it might work for shooting too.

Can't say I have had any use of one.... I prefer to use a chisel.
Yes, I have one. It's a good little plane. I use it all the time. It's a nice compliment to my shoulder plane. Since you can take off the nose, you can get into corners. I have been cleaning up some rabbets on the inside of a frame. It was to awkward to get a chisel in. Since the plane is taller, I was able to clean out the corners very easily.
I don't think it would be very good for shooting since it's a little small and not heavy enough.

Would it make sense that the bullnose could also double as a shoulder plane, i.e. cleaning up tenon shoulders? It seems like a very similar configuration and you get the added benefit of a chisel plane when confronted with those hard to get at places.

Yes, it would work and I've done it. I always go back to my shoulder plane to clean tenons. I prefer the heft and length of the shoulder plane. (Shhhh... Don't tell anyone but I've been known to use my #78 rabbet plane to clean tenons too.)Len

Hi Len,
Yeah I was thinking that the low 15° angle would work good for fine tuning tenons too. I'll have to give my 78 a tqirl tonight.
I promise not to tell anyone that you use your #78 for tenons.

Bob, you shouldn't use a shoulder or bullnose or rabbet plane (or any other plane with a blade as wide as the body) for shooting because it well continuously wear away the shooting board.

On the whole, I'm glad I bought one. I've used it for a number of things. My only slight beef is that the nose portion that sets the mouth opening tends to slip closed after a while. It's hard to get that small knurled knob tight enough so that it stays put. But it cuts well and the blade adjuster is pretty solid - not scads of backlash like a cheaper bullnose I have.
If you build it he will come.

Did you know there was a small set screw in the front to keep the mouth set at a certain distance?

I've not had a problem with mine on keeping the nose set but I do have that problem with my Stanley 92. Len

Guess it's time I re-read the instructions. Thanks. I totally missed that.

Bob,
I use a rabbet plane (Stanley 78) or shoulder plane crossgrain to the post (or with the grain of the case end) to flush the post to the case end, right where the knee of the leg begins, and up an inch or two. The remainder of the post is easily cleaned up with smoothing plane, then a few strokes with a scraper cleans all up.

Ray,
Thanks man, I'll give that a go tonight. I need to start thinking more along the lines of getting it done with the tools I have. What some might call resourcefulness..........
