Lee Valley Book Sale and 30th annivers
Got an email this morning letting me know Lee Valley’s having a 30th Anniversary sale on their books, 20% off. Pretty cool. They have lots of books in many woodworking categories, going to complete my finishing library by getting Flexner’s book.
Being the bargain hunter I am, I checked out the Clearance section first. That was my only disappointment, as the single book left there was Open Timber Roofs of the Middle Ages. No relevant projects come to mind, LOL!
Congratulations, Mr. Lee, and long live Lee Valley.

Open Timber Roofs...
I must be the only person on the planet who bought that one. I think it's on sale because the cover picture's upside down -- mine was anyway. I had a legitimate interest, having once been a medievalist, but it's quite interesting from a woodwork point of view to see how the joinery progressed from one style to the next. If anything, the change in style was driven by improvements in joinery rather than vice versa. And the detail work is humbling to contemplate, especially when you consider that no-one was going to see it close-up. Not a wasted ten bucks for me.
If you're a fan of Patrick O'Brian's "Master & Commander" series, LV has a number of old naval reprints that help make sense of some of that sailing ship bafflegab that used to fly over my landlubber's head. A lot of it still does, but I'm getting there. Again, it's astonishing how much technical stuff young officers had to learn.

"I think it's on sale because the cover picture's upside down...." Too funny.
I was reading a cop novel the other night (PI novel, actually) -- super-sleepy, just trying to squeeze out one more page before turning the light out. I looked over to the right-hand page and it was upside-down! Being so tired, it took a few seconds to be sure, but yep. Had to turn the book around and flip through a bunch of pages to find the right place. They stuck about 20 pages in upsidedown and backwards!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
FG, I nearly went for the timber roofs in my addictive quest for knowledge but couldn't figure a new/old joint that I may be able to use. I have Flexner's book so I did order the lady's -TM- I have been impressed with her articles. My congrat's to LV as well
Your reversed "signature" a strip of folded pages, several books long, was set in the pile for binding then stitched in and/or glued to form the body of the book. It was then cut-small and cased in. There will be at least a half doz. others with the same surprise.
The gent was correct on LV's old sea reprints. The movie Master and Commander-The Other Side of the World was the merging of the 1st and 13th of 20 1/2 or so volumes. Those that read these are rabid devotees who were stunned that the author would have the gaul to die with a half finished book on his desk. I have read the series almost 4 times and will again due to the anal level of detail-you always see another connection or issue that you had missed. The movie was well done but of necessity a reduced version. They actually bought a proper ship and converted her for the movie.
Paddy, ever the sailor.
It's a new feature from the publisher. Stops you flipping to the end to find out whodunnit. Not that you would. Jim
