2 to argue then move it to the Electricals section
7 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs
5 to flame the spell checkers
3 to correct spelling/grammar flames
6 to argue over whether it’s “lightbulb” or “light bulb” … another 6 to condemn those 6 as stupid

What, no one suggested a lightbulb upgrade?!
Len,
I think that you should have posted this in the Tavern instead of General Discussion.

My fault! I exercised undue influence and am thereby am guilty of Corruption of a Poster. Lighten up Len. You seem to be trying to establish yourself as the most luminous bub, by trying to shine lite on the low wattage of the rest of us.

Cripes! don't you know the proper description is incandescent lamp????
Anomous.
All these newcomers use lightbulbs just because they saw Norm use them. Any woodworker with proper skills can work in the dark.
There's a fellow out there who's been changing lightbulbs for 35 years. Truth be told, he's forgotten more about lightbulb changing than most of us will ever learn. He'll be along shortly to settle the issue.
Any woodworker with proper skills can work in the dark...
I DO THAT ALL THE TIME.. Good lightin' in the shop but a dim bulb in me head!
Yeah.... All my furniture looks better in the dark, too. LOL.
I'll only use hand lights not power lights. Call me traditional but I like the peace and quiet of a candle.
A Esarte,
Bravo... I am cracking up! That one DEFINATELY needs to be on the list.
You guys/gals are the best.

Len I want to thank you for your post. It is hard to understand why so many people have nothing to do but correct others

What about that we should not buy then at the local big box store because the little guy can't compete with their pricing....
Len,
Have just got up from rolling on floor-but still need to know if said bulb is 3 phase.
I've bookmarked the thread so I can come back to it in November...
1 quietly fuming over the extensive range of dead kewl lightbulbs available to the US market while we on t'other side o the pond have to make do with run-o-the-mill stuff...
1 smart Alec patting himself on the back for sneaking a gross of US spec lightbulbs past HM Customs and Excise, oblivious to what happens when ya hit a 110v bulb with 240v...
1 "enlightened" finatic who thinks we should abandon incandescent bulbs for hi-efficiency filaments despite them only working when they want to....

Frankly incandecents are on the way out. Solid state bulbs will replace them... (what number is this from the list above :-)Mark

Anyone seen the new L.E.D. worklamp? I only use high-tech tools. Made in the U.S.A., not of that foreign junk.

I've heard that in the not-too-distant future, most of our house lighting will be LCD(?) imbedded in walls and floors, permanent, no bulb changing needed.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
FG.
LED - light emitting diode is what you mean. LCD - liquid crystal display. You need to have a back light with it. Either a miniature fluorescent or EL panel. (EL Electroluminescent)

I was checking my bulbs and I noticed that the bases varried by as much as .015"!! I checked them using salad tongs and a tape measure, but I am confident that I got good measurements. I am certian that I am getting uneven light distribution, not to mention that the electrical loads are probably unballanced due to the variations.
Mikeplease excuse my spelling.
That uneven light distribution may be due to the tab in the bottom of the bulb socket being slightly off center. Remove the bulb and stick your finger into the socket and straighten the tab..................................Oh yeah, make sure the switch is off before you do this. - lol
I apperciate your comments. But THAT is not the problem as it is in the socket. It could only be the discrepancy in the threads. The tab in the bottom could not cause such varriation. I have worked for play-dough corporation as a Play-dough engineer for the last 15 years. I think that I know about light bulbs.
(this is fun!)
Mikeplease excuse my spelling.
My most humble apologies, Mike. My 20 years as a nuclear engineer mean nothing when compared to playdough. - lmao!!
You may have a point about the bulb threads, however. Those asian threads just aren't as good as those made in the USA. - lol
Play-dough engineer ! DAMN! Better than a PHD!
My grandbaby .. I got her all these cans of Play-dough!
She just mixed it all together with all the dog hair! I asked her why she did that.. She told me my face looked funny when she rolled it in the dog hair?

I checked them using salad tongs and a tape measure.. LOL.. THAT was funny!
What brand of salad tongs?
Hinkeles of course!
Mikeplease excuse my spelling.
OK, after everyone bashing my previous methods for measuring the bulbs I bought a set of Starret thread gauges and a digital micrometer. After taking a second set of measurements I came of with .014" of varriation. Which proves that my origional methods were plenty accurate.
So can we get past my measuring techniques? I have a real problem here! How about some sugestions on how I can bring my light bulbs back into spec? I think I might check my florescent tubes as well.
Mikeplease excuse my spelling.

Hey Will,
Can we see pic of girl friend?
Lets not forget the 8 people who had a light bulb break in the socket and then tell us how they got out the base.
1 potato
2 apple
3 Pliers with the power turned off to the socket
4 Pliers where the took the fuse out
5 which is better fuses or breakers. but this is a digression from the original topic of the thread.
6 pliers with the fuse turned off
7 pliers with the main off

Will, on construction jobs, The electricians install temporary light bulbs all through the jobsite. Guess what? They are all left handed. NO NOT THE ELECTRICIANS! the bulbs. (Too many guys would steal
regular ones and bring them home. When one of my sons attended M I T,he asked me to 'borrow' one for him to bring back to show to some of his classmates. He had casually mentioned that when he was a kid, his dad fooled him by asking him to replace a dead bulb (Of course the 'replacement'
was a southpaw.
Those smart alec electric engineer wannabes, poo pooed the story, as any body with an ounce of brains KNOWS there's no such thing. To make a long tale even longer, I believe my boy won a few bets using that bulb. Steinmetz.
THAT WAS A GOODER!
I could be wrong.. I think they really used some bulbs like that in generator and forge places to keep the bulbs in the sockets.. I been wrong before!

Anybody remember when light bulbs were free?
Anybody remember when light bulbs were free?..
No I think it was 0.50 cents a month or somethin' like that.. Just had to bring back the Brass.. Just like in the Army!
Nothing in this world is free. The electric companies gave them away free and asked the gov for rate increases to pqay for all those bulbs. Also got you into their 'store' to possably get you to buy appliances refrigs/ toasters etcThe biggest scam today is 'long life' bulbs They consume the same amoutnt of watts ($$$) but are so dim you have to burn two to read the paper. Steinmetz
Because I have found the options for lightbulbs on the market today lacking, I choose to make my own. I can't imagine why any one would want to buy one.
Mikeplease excuse my spelling.
I bought the deluxe Leigh Lightbulb Jig and it's been sitting in my shop collecting dust for three years. Make an offer and it's yours...
The unit I tried before had a lot of fence deflection and was not square to the table by 1/3 degree. Using scrap MDF and pine I was able to make a high precision jig, the materials only cast $50, and it only took 4 days to make it.
Mikeplease excuse my spelling.
Personally I'm all for LED's whether it's in that nifty little craftsman cap or strapped on a forehead or 'yer headlights or whatever
I agree.. I got some Philips Florescent?? I thinh I got 4 for 8 dollars or so...Whatever... They use ALOT less current and seem to me about as bright so I used more in the shop.. Been there awhile.. And am happy with them..
HOWEVER.. They won't start in my shop in a Really COLD Chicago morning.. Dang!
Just me...
EDIT::
By the way...
Light bulbs do NOT give off light...
They suck up darkness.. You have to replace then when the bulb is FULL!

3 to complain that they are on dial up and the light bulb image takes to long to download.
1 to resize the image of the light bulb and expound on the virtues of InfraView.

... followed by 6 who say they never buy anything other than _____ brand of light bulb and never have any trouble.2 pointing out that all light bulbs are made by only two factories, both in China, and all the (Delta, Grizzly, Jet) bulbs are the same anyway.

How about those 'long life bulbs' sold in the super mkts?
They last longer, but put out much less light for the wattage.
Usually sold at a premium, most people buy them once, then go blind. While it's important to consider the wattage, wattage only indicates the power consumed. Lumens however tells the relative brightness.
Bargain bulbs are no bargain. Stein.
Definitely the words of a true Luminary.
I hold the view that we are increasing the unpublicized danger of photon pollution by continuing to use light bulbs that emit large quantities of photons that head off in all directions. Therefore, I now use a technology secretly developed deep in the coal mines of West Virginia and known to only a few mountaineer cognoscenti as "dark suckers". They are cunningly designed to look just like the evil "light bulbs" they replace in order to hide in plain sight, thus maintaining product secrecy until we are ready to challenge the big boys (GE, Phillips et al) on the open market. The "dark suckers" are designed to operate using principles developed by Bubba Hawkings using an obscure cousin's theory on the operation of black holes as a starting point. When turned on, these ingenious devices suck photons out of the air and instantly dispatch them to a black hole in the center of the Milky Way galaxy. I think Bubba may be on to something good here, so I'm supporting him by buying his entire production of 4 bulbs per month @ $5 per bulb as my way of supporting his efforts to clean up the universe. Bubba tells me that he plans to increase his production capacity very soon (20 bulbs per month) so when additional product becomes available, I'll be able to pass on some "dark suckers" to my friends on this forum for only a small markup to cover my packaging and shipping costs. Regards,Ron
MIKE.. Not sure where it was made.. I got a really old light bulb in my shop... Was there in 1960 or so.. Still lights up.. I have 118 Volts here.. The bulb is marked 200 Volts DC!..
It was here when I got the place (1959 or so)... I put a wooden box around the bulb just so I do not break it by accident....
Aye... they dinna make em like they used to.. ;)Mike Wallace

Anyone seen the new Lee Valley lightbulb? I was thinking of getting the $5,650 LN lightbulb, but the LV has twice the gizmos at half the price. Sowhaddyallthink?
