one of the better steels for shafting is 4140, but 1. how big a shaft 2. how much hores power. 3. how far over hung from the bearing is the chuck or work. 4. the kind of bearing you want to use. 5. how fast will it turn, RPM 6. are you going to machine the shaft your self. or do you need help.
