¿ Large THIN Panel Which Remains Dead Flat ?
I want to fabricate two panels nominally 4′ X 8′ (yes, that’s feet), but as THIN as possible. These panels will be used as sliding screens. Both sides will show and I would like them to be faced with sliced red oak veneer. This is for a mid-century. Danish Modern interior, so I want the to make flush panels with no visible stiles and rails.
The problem is that I want the thickness of the panels to be no more than 1 1/4″ , 1″ would even be better. Since these panels will be unrestrained, I am worried about them cupping, bowing or twisting – in other words, I want them to remain dead flat.
Among the solutions I have thought of is to fabricate thin torsion boxes with a grid 3/4″ thich and facings of 1/4″ plywood.
Another thought was to veneer and edge a couple of the honeycomb panels which are used in the interior fittings of custom aircraft, but that is likely a budget buster.
Does anyone out there have any experience with something like this or any ideas for an approach which has a good chance for success.
Obviously, I would truly hate to expend the time and expense for materials and onetime tooling on something that ends up being a pile of fiewood.
Thanks to one and all,
Rich

I bet you could laminate (2) 1/4 sheets to a piece of 3/4 foam insulation instead of honeycomb. I would put a 3/4 by 1 1/2 solid frame around the foam to attach the hardware to.
I used plywood with medium density overlay on both sides on a project a while back. I was impressed by how flat the sheet was when I got it. I didn't use all of it in the project, and the leftover pieces are still flat. It's available in sheets from 3/8" to 1-3/8" in 1/8" increments. Here's a link to the place where I got it.
