Some time back I built my own Cabinets, raised panels on the doors and cabinet sides. Construction looks good. Finish looks like azz. I messed up and used maple for the face frames, rails and styles then poplar for raised panels. Don’t ask why, I wouldn’t use poplar for anything now but paint grade building. The problem I am having is that the poplar became splotchy after a light oak stain. The finish is brushed poly. I did these several years ago, is there any way to restain and finish these correctly without having to sand through the poly? I am sure I will have to go a little darker. Maybe toners or glazes after a light sanding on the poly then recoat? Thanks!!!

At this point I'd paint over everything some solid color. Maybe distressed finish if that's your thing. Or else you could just paint the panels and leave the frames natural. IMHO you'll never get the tone perfectly matched, and even if it looks good now each wood will gradually change differently in time. You'll know better next time.

Thanks for the input, guess I'll just leave them alone......
