What is the best method of keeping the finish out of the 1/4″ holes that have been drilled for shelf supports? I almost always seen to get some in most of the holes, no matter how careful I am.

1) Drill the holes after you finish the wood. Or...
2) Stick dowels in the holes while you finish. Or...
3) Does it really matter?
Spray the finish.
