Gary,
I’m currently building a section of maple countertop, 24″x42″. Is it necessary to flatten and square all four surfaces of each strip prior to glue up? My plan was to build the countertop in three sections, jointing and planing each prior to final glueup. Can I get away with just making the two glue surfaces of each individual strip flat and parallel?

Hey,
It's not necessary to square up your stock in order to glue it up. But I'd flatten and square at least three faces so the gluing is easier. This way you can bang your maple down to either your clamps or your gluing cauls, whatever you use to keep your glue-ups flat. This will cut down on the amount of cleaning you'll have to do later on. If you left the top and bottom edges rough then you'll have that much more work to do to get them flat for either the next glue-up or the final piece. Good luck, Gary
