Hi All,
I just set up my 12″ jointer I’ve had in storage for 2 years. Last I remembered it was cutting perfectly fine. It’s a SAC from Italy with a Tersa 4 knife cutter head.
Now it is convexing the edges. Example, I can take a perfectly straight board according to my 6′ Starett straight edge, make 2-3 passes and the board now rocks on it’s edge, the more passes I take the worse it rocks.
The tables are coplaner or parallel to each other.
Any ideas?
Thanks

How is the top of the cutting circle in relation to the outfeed table? It should be a hair above the table, but it sounds as if yours might be well above.

Hi Don,
Actually I lowered the outfeed table just a few thousandths and it is perfect now. The outfeed was a tad to high above the top dead center arc of the knives.HOWEVER.....Why would the boards edge be out of square to the boards face if my fence is DEAD square to my infeed table? (according to my Starett tri square). Thanks for replying too :)
I would use a dial indicator to check that the knives are parallel to the tables. If 1 or more of the knives is out, the cut will be out of square. Another item to check is the blade itself, wear or improper sharpening could cause the cutting edge to be uneven. Then check the fence in a couple of places on the infeed and outfeed tables to make sure it hasn't warped. If all knives are parallel to the tables, and the fence is square and not warped, the cut should be square.

I found this jig to fast and more accurate than the jig that came with my machine (also Italian)
Perhaps this will help.
I've also found in my experience that sometimes its the simple solution, that one that stares you right in the face that is the one you need. countless times I practicaly took apart my universal just to discover that it was not what was needed, a simple adjustment would have sufficed!
Good luck,
Chaim

Hi Chaim and Seajai,
I have a Tersa cutter head in this jointer, you might not be familiar with this type of cutter head. It is made in Switzerland and utilizes a centrifugal gib lock that automatically and extremely precisely sets the knives all at the same constant diameter by turning on the machine. All 4 knives a dead parallel to the outfeed table but I am going back to the shop to check how parallel they are to the infeed table. They should be parallel to the infeed because both tables are perfectly parallel to each other.
The outfeed table must be slightly lower than the top of the cutting circle of the knives because the board will lie on the outfeed table at the bottom of the scallops produced by the knives. There is a slight difference between the top of the scallops produced by the knives on the cutterhead and the bottom of the scallops.
