I am ready to purchase the next two pieces of equipment for my workshop. I plan to purchase a 6″ jointer and a drill press. I am considering the Grizzly heavy duty jointer that is on sale for $325 and the Shop Fox Oscillating drill press that is $219 from Grizzly. Any advice from anyone?

Dear Randal,
I don't know much about Grizz or SF tools, but I would STRONGLY suggest an 8" jointer over a 6". I have a PM64A 6" jointer that I upgraded with a "Shelix" cutterhead. Great jointer, but I can't tell you how often I can't face joint because the peice is 7 1/2" or so. 6" is just too small.
Good Luck!

I cannot recommend enough that you should go with an 8" jointer if you can. Years ago I bought a Jet 6" jointer. I lament that purchase every time I have to rip a 7 1/2" board down to get it through the jointer. Plus, with the larger jointer you can get a longer bed which will GREATLY aid in jointing longer boards.
Grizzly is a solid company. I have their 1023 sl cabinet saw and I could not be happier. With a little luck, soon I'll be buying a 12" jointer from them.

I have a little delta 6" jointer and I agree with the other posters here, get the 8" if you can afford it. I have a Grizzly 1023slx TS and the Grizzly 17"hd bandsaw. Love them both. I would would not hesitate to get a Grizzly jointer. If you get the jointer, let us know how it turns out. I've been eyeing one as another addition to the shop.

I sell the dickens out of the Shop Fox oscillating Sander/DP. So far no complaints. The Shop Fox 8" jointer seems to be well built also. My favorite 6" jointer is the Powermatic 64A and primarily due to its longer bed. However, if you are doing a lot of face jointing then the 8" is more practical. For a person who only edge joints small items the ShopFox bench top jointer is pretty popular and better priced than the equivalent from Delta.
I've got a 16" Invicta (Pre Delta) in the store for about 4,000.00 if you really want to do some face jointing. Gotta have 3 phase power available though.
Sincerely;

If you can afford the 8" jointer, go for it. You might want to put Yorkcraft on your list for 6" jointers. I don't know how the price compares with the Grizzly, but either one of those machines should treat you well. The Grizz 8" is a fine machine, based on user-comments here and in other forums.

If you want a 6" jointer, make an offer to someone with a 6" machine that wants to upgrade to a larger jointer. Should be easy.
