Hey Mister Joinery – great book you have out there.
I am putting together a couch and am wondering what suggestions you might have for the 4 corner braces upon which the seat upholstery frame will sit. On the last one, I used double biscuits (one over top of the other) on each end of each brace. Works fine to date, but somehow seems like it may not be enough – I am waiting for a grandkid to start jumping on it to see if it really holds up. Thanks

Hey Dan,
Thanks for the note. I like my biscuits with gravy, not for structure.
The problem with them is failure is complete and rapid, if they or the glue gives out. Even a dowel joint will wiggle for ten or fifteen years before you have to replace that dang chair. [like my office chair]. But when a biscuit fails gravity just takes over.
So, if I understand this construction correctly, you’re just putting in corner braces to support the entire upholstery frame. On my couches, I screw this frame to the inside of my couch rails. All the
way along the front and rear rails and the side rails too. Plenty of holding power there. If you don’t like that idea, because you do have some fitting of that upholstery frame to the inside of your couch, then I’d still screw the corner blocks in place, and add some glue blocks underneath the upholstery frame. Better yet glue on a ledger strip and let the frame rest on the corner blocks and two long ledger strips.
And oh yeah, since I came from the Windy City, go Bears. Gary
Perfect - I'll go with lag bolts in the corner barces and add ledger strips along the front and back. I was born in Chicago myself, Oak Park near North Avenue. My folks were north siders and Bears season ticket holders in the 60's and I love to see the Bears do well - -'85/'86 was just great. This year could also be a lot of fun. Detroit is now home because I am in the auto business - all roads lead here -Have a Happy Holiday's!!
Hey Dan,
The ledger strips and corner blocks should work just fine. Now do you remember Jack Brickhouse? Did he broadcast those Bears games in the 60's on the radio or was it somebody else? Good luck with your projects. Gary
Gary,
Dad says Brickhouse was the radio voice of the Bears. We moved to Cleveland area in '66 and he thinks Jack had been on the air for at least 10 years by that time. - Regards
Thanks Dan. Good luck with your work. Gary
