Hello Swifty,
You might have seen my post asking this same question. It looks like we are on our own on this one. I'm not sure if it's a matter of there not being enough users of this machine out there or if they just are not willing to talk about their experiences with the JJP-12. I have been looking at a larger combo machine for some time (my 10 1/4" Inca 510 has been sold) the prices for the Laguna, Mini Max, Hammer etc are a bit to high. So it has boiled down to the JET or Grizzly combo machines. I don’t like the fact that the fence on the Grizzly machine has to be removed to change from jointer to planer, nor do I like the American style "pork chop" guard on the Grizzly. The rest of the machine looks pretty good. On the Jet, I like the Euro blade guard and the fact that the fence and guard do not have to be removed for the change over. I also like the single lifting handle for the jointer feed tables. The fence support/ adjustment system looks a bit light to me. The other option for me would be to use same money to purchase two separate machines. Two separate machines would be ideal if I had a larger shop but, at this point I really need to be able to accommodate my cars in the garage during those long cold winters up here in the north. Good luck with you quest, whatever I decide, you can be sure I will post all the details here on Knots.
Combo Jointer/Planer
Swifty,
I have no knowledge of the Jet combo jointer/planer but I do have a 3 HP Laguna 12" jointer/planer purchased 12 years ago. Two years ago I bought and installed a Byrd Tools Shelix carbide cutter head on it.

I paid about $1100.00 for the cutter head, so the price difference on the Jet is not unusual.
The Laguna fence and guard have to be removed before you move the jointer tables for planing, but I've gotten used to it and don't mind the slight inconvenience. Otherwise the machine has been a real worker. The planer has zero snipe.

The combos are not that scary unless you are on a tight production schedule.
