Hey folks…
I have an opportunity to purchase a used 14″ Jet Bandsaw (JWBS-14CS) with fence and mobile base, and a Jet mini lathe (JML-1014C) with a couple of chucks and the extension all for about $500. They are in good working order, but I haven’t had the usual lengthy, tedious duration of evaluating and considering what’s out there.
I wanted a 16″ Jet because of the larger resaw capability, but I could achieve this with a riser block on the 14″. The 14″ has a 1hp motor, but I really don’t know how much that matters either since I’ve never used a bandsaw. I could use the bandsaw straight away, but have always been a little skiddish about buying used tools. The lathe is not a “need”, but I’ll want one someday and it’s a good price.
Does anyone out there have either of these tools? What do you think about them?
Would a 14″ bandsaw suit a weekend hobbyist? (I’ll be building things like chairs, cabinets, chests, etc.)
I don’t own any Jet, but haven’t heard much negative feedback about them, what’s your general opinion of their products?
Oh, one more…assuming I buy the bandsaw, how long before I’ll want to buy an oscillating sander?
Any help is much appreciated.

Jet is a good company. The 14" is a good start, and the riser block should help. Because it is a good deal, you could use the saw for a while and when you want to upgrade, you could sell it back for the same price, and yes you will want an oscillating sander soon after, I for now have a belt sander I made a table for. It gets the job done
Yes, my best friend is a hammer.
