Some while back there was interest in the Jet 1442 lathe, but noone could seem to find one. I just purchased one yesterday, set it up in about an hour and turned a few practice spindles within a few minutes. This is my first jet tool (other than a dust collector) and I am quite impressed. This thing is a tank, the fit and finish is excellent and assembly was a breeze. I was surprised how quickly I had it up and running. There was no tweaking or fiddling necessary at all. I haven’t put any large stock in it, but the general heft of the machine suggests that it should be quite stable. With the small practice stock I used last night (2″ by 2″ by 18″) there was no discernable vibration. Though I’ve been making furniture for years, I’m new to turning (if you don’t cound 8th grade shop) so I’m no expert on lalthes, but this seems like a very good machine for the money.

About $800, right? I believe that's the one I'm saving for.

With the legs, it was 882, including tax. This was retail from a shop that I was happy to support. The best price I could find online was only a few dollars cheaper. I like supporting local (40 miles away) businesses when possible. The shop and staff are well informed and helpful.
