Hi Everyone,
Well, I’ve cashed in some vacation time and will finally be buying a dust collector. I was hoping for a dust collector and table saw, but that’s not going to happen right now. Does anyone have one or anyone seen the new JDS 2HP portable cyclone?
Though it’s kind of spendy, it looks like a really nice compact solution that doesn’t have to be mounted to a wall. At $1299 with shipping included, it’s quite a bit less expensive than the Oneida portable cyclone. But I wonder how effective a short cyclone can really be. Is it significantly better than a single stage collector with a canister filter? There are no reviews or anything out on this.
Maybe Sarge can check it out for me at the IWF in Atlanta?

Bumping my own post. Is this cyclone just to new. Perhaps I should just bite the bullet and be the first to get one.
Couldn't stand the silence on my own posting. I ordered this today! I'll post a mini-review when it comes in.
I finally gave my new JDS mini-cyclone a small workout today squaring up some Claro Walnut. My first impression is how did I ever get by without a proper dust collector! Here is a quick review of the set up:1) Shipping across the country took only 5 days! The UPS freight guy delivered it into my garage! That's no easy feat since I am working off of a temporary gravel driveway. Only one cosmetic scratch on the frame from the shipping.2) Assembly was straightforward and simple. They even provided 4 fully rotating urethane wheels instead of two as the manual says. 3) It takes four, yes four people to lift the motor unit onto the assembled frame. I put a few more cosmetic scratches on it from that excercise.4) It's noise level is mostly tolerable, but you do want hearing protection. There is a an annoying high-pitched rattle from the metal frame that I will likely have to get some foam insulation to eliminate.5) It's ready to plug in and use right from there. The only thing that caught me by surprise is the motor for clearing the filter automatically turns on for a minute or two right when you plug it in.6) The JDS sales rep also threw in a dust collection kit 5 extra plastic bags.
Sorry I missed this thread Jointerman. I walked right by their booth twice a day as it was by the rear door where vendors come in and go out. I saw it and stopped briefly but... did not see it in action.
Too late now but you should have e-mailed me and I could have checked it out. Oh well... hope it does fine and obviously it appears to be doing so.
Good luck with it...
Sarge..
Hi Sarge,Getting the cyclone was one of the reasons that I didn't go to IWF, although I could have gotten airfare free and some of my meals paid for and maybe some of the hotel (tagged onto another business trip). Not all of it would have been free. The money that I "saved" by not going went into the cyclone. It sure is a pretty looking dust collector! The only thing that bothers me is a metal rattle that comes and goes from the frame. I'll have to put in a rubber gasket somewhere to stop the extra noise.
Should be an easy fix as much better to come from the "frame" than the cyclone itself. Enjoy as it makes life much easier in the shop.
Sarge..
I purchased their new 3HP unit this past spring when they had not even introduced it yet.
I like it. I fit under the stairway in the shop which was basically lost space and it does the job.
you can see the installation in my shop here if you like

Garry,Quite the beautiful shop you have! There's no sawdust anywhere! The only evidence of your wood working in the shop are the nice furnishings, I take it that the JDS Cyclone sucks up the sawdust quite well? ;).
I am satisfied with the performance so far.The dustless shop was not only because of the dust collector. I had to take the time to tidy up the shop for other reasons. That is when the photo were taken. The shop is not normally that ship shape.http://www.superwoodworks.com
Jointerman-
I'm curious, now that you've been runnig a while, how is the JDS holding up? Could you supply us with some background info on your shop?
-tools connected
-length/ dimensions of run to JDS
- strengths/ weakensses?
I have a 2-car garage converted to a shop. I run a 3 HP cabinet saw, 6" jointer, 13" portable planer, 16" bandsaw, and a Hitachi SCMS. I'm thinking of popping for the 2HP JDS. Would love to see a layout for your shop, and comments on dust collection performance for comparison.
Thanks.
"Honey, will you please make some sawdust and track it across the carpet?"
"Yes, dear..."
OldSaw,I've attached some pictures of my shop with the JDS 2100-CK Cyclone.-tools connectedCurrently I only have one tool connected at a time. I purchased the JDS because it's mobile and I didn't have to worry about setting it up with all the ducting from the get go. I wanted to start using it right away.-length/ dimensions of run to JDS.I only use a single 10 foot hose. Eventually (few years from now?) I plan on running some 6 inch metal ducting with reducers to 4 or 5 inch flex hose as I get close to the machine.- strengths/ weakensses? What I really like is that it has a nice 1µ filter and the filter cleans itself with a separate motor running a paddle across the pleats. The dust collection can snaps in place and is very easy to empty and reattach. The only weakness that I can think of is that this cyclone is shorter and doesn't have a funnel shape. I think that this is the why the plastic bag set below the filter seems to fill up.
I recently acquired this unit also. I, too, only use one 10 flex hose at a time. There has been one thing that has been a plus for me - I put a reducer on the second 4"inlet and attached a 2" vacuum hose to it. I can clip that to the left side of the table saw where I can pick it up and use it to pick up the dust that accumulates when ripping a batch of stock. Having that capability saves having to go to the shop vac to get things picked up.
Diz,Great idea on the 2 inch reducer for a shop vac hose. I can see where that'd come in handy, especially on a couple of my machines like the bandsaw which has both 4 and 2 inch ports.BTW: Do you have the issue with the secondary bag filling up?
My initial observation was how much what I considered fine dust was in the main canister. I've only used it enough to have to empty the bag twice - but I have to fess up. Last time I thought the view window in the main canister was just dusty - it wasn't- shavings up to the brim. So I think this loaded up the canister more.
