We bought a bunch of quartersawn cherry years ago for a project that we never used. Finally getting around to using it and i’m amazed at how dark it is. it’s a dark pink/brown/red. The grain looks exactly like cherry, it handplanes like cherry, i’ve just never seen raw cherry this dark.
The pictures show some ‘normal’ cherry (though a bit pale) next to the quartersawn. handplaned surface with boiled linseed oil.
What do you think, is this really cherry?

Cherry ?
I would say 99.9% Yes. There is a tell tail gum pocket, and cherry will go that dark on it's own over time.
Cherry
I also believe it to be cherry

Cherry
Looks cherry to me but maybe more of a sap wood piece - looks almost bleached until you plane off a shaving and the light color is through and through. I agree with all that commented to your post.

It's cherry
Looks like cherry that's been sitting around for some time now. It does darken like that naturally. In fact, lots of folks will leave a newly finished piece out in the direct sunlight for a few days to speed up that natural process.
Best,
