I was in an Aveda store recently and the cabinetry was made out of some attractive sheet goods I had never seen before. It had a very interesting dark-and-light color, straw color to dark brown, almost black. A tight pattern, almost the size of rice grains. Very small and even. Didn’t look anything like plywood, MDF, Particleboard, or any of the usual stuff. The folks in the store thought it was manufactured out of flax and sunflower seed husks after the oil was pressed out. I tried a web search but couldn’t find any suppliers of it, although Greenpeace mentioned similar materials as being very environmentally friendly since they used renewable resources entirely.
Anyone know what this is and where to buy it? Thanks in advance.

There's several of these alternative boards becoming available. Here's links to two manufacturers: http://www.phenixbiocomposites.com, and http://www.dow.com/bioprod/prodapp/fiber.htm. There's also sheet goods manufactured entirely from bamboo --- http://www.plyboo.com/. I know of a retailer in the San Francisco area for Phenix, but you probably need to find one local to you.

Thanks for your suggestions on natural fiber composites. I'm in San Francisco myself, so I 'm very interested in finding out the retailer you mentioned.

The retailer is Plywood and Lumber Sales (http://www.pals4wood.com). The branch in San Francisco has very limited weekend hours.
