Has anyone used the Jooltool for sharpening jointer/planer blades? Is it a worthwhile investment?
Thanks in advance,
Harv

The jooltool isn't the first to offer the see through sharpening technique. I can't imagine it would be any good at more than an occasional honing of a small jointer or planer knife. I've used knife grinders for profiling shaper and moulder knives and I've seen what it takes to do a proper sharpening of 24" and 36" planer knives at my local sharpening shop. I'm looking for the "as seen on TV" label shortly. I'm not impressed, especially for the cost. Wait for the hobby woodworking magazine review. I'm not expecting to see it in the pro trade magazines any time soon.
Thanks so much for your opinion Rick. I saw a demo for chisels and router bits and couldn't help but wonder if it could also efficiently sharpen the larger items.
Thanks again.

You would need a good solid support for long items. Free hand would certainly not give a straight edge. The applications in their website certainly is geared toward small items and at $349 for the basic unit it's not being given away. Look at the Grizzly Universal Knife grinder for $200 for straight knives. Most folks are better off sending the knives out to a sharpening shop in the long run. Steel warps like wood in some ways. As enough steel is ground away tension can be released and the knives can warp. My sharpener guy is told to watch out for this and fix it.
