I’m VERY new to this woodworking stuff. I’ve been afraid of using the table saws after watching my Tech. teacher cut three of his fingers off right in front of me. Of course that was a long time ago but I can still picture it when I look at the saw.
For a while now I’ve been watching James (lungfish) make all kinds of things and I thought maybe I could make something too. I thought maybe I could make a simple bowl to start out so I wouldn’t have to use any really sharp tools.
I have a picture of it here. It’s Pine with Red Oak stain and poly. I made it mostly by hand using a chisel and sand paper. But I did use a jigsaw to cut a ring and then the drill press to cut out the inside. After I had the cut out ring I used the chisel to make it a little more smooth so that I could sand it. The inside bottom of the bowl I chiseled out to make the cup.
I plan on using the bowl for dry potpourri.
I also just made a jewlery box for my daughter. It is also Pine but with a Maple stain but I have not yet put the finish on. This time I got enough courage to use the table saw to cut the pieces and the band sander. (I still have all my fingers!)
Well I guess for a first project it’s not too bad but it could definitely be a lot better.

To me it's not important what your first efforts look like. Woodworking is a process. You'll take pride in everything you make and you'll be happier with your results as time goes by.
You may decide to work strictly with hand tools and be entirely satisfied with that approach.. many people are. But I would encourage you to respect power tools.. not fear them. Every good book or video on power tools will show you how to use them safely. And if you focus on safety and follow the rules you will learn that power tools can be just as safe as hand tools.
In fact, the only injuries I have inflicted upon myself were the result of poor hand placement while using my chisels and dovetail saw.
I like your bowl and box. Keep at it, Julie. You're a woodworker!
Thanks for the input I really appreciate it.
I do plan to use hand tools more than power tools. Not because I'm afraid of them but because I want to make more bowls. I like using the chisels and the bowls are fun to make. (Once James gives me permission to use better wood)
I have a lot of ideas on what kind of bowls I want to make. Not the typical bowl though, something more interesting. Like a vase type bowl or something.?.
Thanks again for the input.
Before you know it you will have perfected the craft of bowl making.
Me? The only bowls I know about are the Cotton Bowl, the Super Bowl, the Rose Bowl etc.
Hope you'll keep posting pictures, Julie.
That's funny :)
I'll get some more pictures soon. I have a second box in progress along with the first. Unfortunitly or fortunitly, not sure which, I made a mistake while making my first box so I cut it in half length wise and now have a second box. I don't know what I will do with it, I don't really want the same box I have.??
For the bowl tools, I've never heard of them but I plan on asking for some in the future.
Uh Oh,
Sounds like I'm in trouble.
Julie can use any tools that I have and she has already hi jacked and dulled up many of them. I am looking into getting a lathe and I am sure that we both will be able to enjoy using that. We will be going to a woodworking show thing that is going on in Syracuse next weekend and that should be fun and educational as well.
And just so that no one thinks that I am some evil wood monger miser.....Don't let her fool you ..........Julie does not really need my permission for use of any wood. There is a whole room full of oak and cherry and maple and ash and some other stuff just waiting around to be used. And she has full access........(-: As long as she sticks to the pine I got from packing crates and she has to take the nails out herself ;-)......
I just hope that I don't get a call at work that someone has chopped thier parts off.

Julie, Julie ... you're not doing it for a living, right?
Right.
Do what you enjoy!
Hand tools is great.
Being new is a lot of the fun. It's when you think you're pretty good, and you're afraid to fail, that it stops being quite so much fun. Or when you think you have to be fast. Or when the damn wood costs so much the object has to be special. Don't be driven!
Enjoy
Life's too short

No, I'm definitly not doing this for a living.
I really do enjoy making bowls though. The hardest part is getting the rings cut out because with the pine I get almost done and the wood splits. Is this because it's pine? It happened three times and I was trying to baby the wood as much as possible. It is very soft but....?
And I'm definitly not afraid of failing or I wouldn't have even started. I know I'll have to practice a lot and not rush things.
You can't fix something if you don't break it first.
Thanks for your advise.
If you or any one else has suggestions on cutting the inside part of a ring please let me know. My thought right now is to use some of James Cherry and try the jigsaw for the inside after I drill a hole in the middle. I'm hoping it wont split.
Thanks again.
...I don't understand this...James is concerned he'll get a call at work that you have hurt yourself....and yet he forces you to use dull tools....he should be in the shop every night sharpening to insure you have the very best ....(he,he...let's see if that causes a fight)
Nice job. Hahahah. :)
I'm sure i'll hear about this one.
Well I really didn't dull most of the tools anyway. He is just full of humor. I did clog up the band sander though. Oops. I heard about that one!
I don't think he cares too much anyway seeing that we did get a bowl out of it.
:)
Julie,
Never mind better wood. Get James to give you some better tools!
You'll need carvings gouges, a scorp, probably an inshave, a compass plane could be useful, a bowl adze would be nice... They don't call it a slippery slope for nuttin'.
