What I do now? LOL....
Bingo!
Well Bill, your decision is your own and I can understand your animosity but;Charles is actually one of the more knowledgeable people here. He's got some really rough edges and if you look in the dictionary under "cantankerous" it says "see Charles".I'm sure you've had some real a$$holes as teachers and mentors in your years and Charles would rank right up there with the best (worst?) but he does generally know what he's talking about. Truthfully I'd like to sit down and drink a few pints with Charles. We'd either part company closer friends or drug apart after a good fight but I know there is a pussycat under that crusty exterior. In fact, at my dinner party I'd want Charles, Sgian, Ian Kirby, a good referee and a lot of ale.So, do as you will, he's alienated a lot of folks here and he will continue to do so but he's not all that bad. What thread pi$$ed you off?Lee
"generally knows what he's talking about"
When he restricts his comments to WW'ing; which he is unfortunately not always inclined to do. I don't need what he has to offer bad enough to tolerate his personal attack mode, his bigotry, or his tendency to want to destroy the momentary joy that some posters want to share ("Grizzly is all junk" in response to some guy talking about his new BS). Intelligent and knowledgeable, definitely. Someone to learn from; IMO, definitely not.
Regards,
Mack

What a relief. I doubt I was alone in trying to think of every post I've done recently and asking myself "Did I pxxx somebody off?" and "What's unctuous mean anyway? - where's that dictionary?".
I'm a newer member and certainly don't know the history or personalities behind your decision, but I would hope if I was ever on the chopping block for being ignored that the person would send me a private email and allow me a chance to possibly mend my ways. Like Riddler (Jim Carey) said to TwoFace (Tommy Lee Jones) in Batman - "If ya kill 'im - he wont learn nuthin". But if the situation is as bad as you say, I suppose he's beyond learning anyway. If you build it - he will come.
That seems a bit rash Bill. In all the years I've been dropping in here I've never felt the need to put any contributor on ignore, but then I can be a pretty objectionable and blunt pillock myself, ha, ha.
And don't believe a word that that Grindinger guy says about me. Slainte.
Richard, me lad. Good to hear from you.
True, you can be blunt, but it's understood you are a master. You are never surly, and you always leave a chap's dignity intact.
How're things in the land of honest stout?
"you always leave a chap's dignity intact."
Well, I'd better change my nicey-nicey approach then Bill. Slainte.RJFurniture
"And don't believe a word that that Grindinger guy says about me."Heh, heh, he..., I've got pictures to back it up...Lee
"I've got pictures to back it up..."
I was wondering where they'd gone Lee. Here's the deal then. You send me a framed blow-up copy, preferably with a wee a bit of carving hacked in here and there as best you can, and I'll tell no-one about that incident if you don't.
Deal? Slainte.RJFurniture
Well, you see, Sgian, I've come clean to all the parties involved so, well, let's just say...., a round trip plane ride to Edinburgh, several nights of pub hopping, a reasonably soft place to land at night and enough spending money so I can buy a round or two and I'll hand deliver the picture. Now, can I be more generous than that?Lee
No, you could hardly be more generous. I'll think about it.
Do I really want you to spend all that money out of your own pocket just to deliver a picture? Slainte.RJFurniture
You know, Ruthie's scheming ways to get us over to Europe, house trading and such. I'd love to get into Scotland and misbehave with you. We'll see, she wants to visit civilization, I'd like to visit Scotland. I suppose the first 5,000 miles is the toughest.Lee
Are you and Lee still going on about those compromising Polaroids involving a pair of knee-high boots and a sheep...-Jazzdogg-
Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.
jazzdog, you're forgetting the most important bit. Remember? The cliff-- the one with a sheer 300 foot drop onto broken rocks and crashing waves.
Jings-- you've got to get your facts right. Slainte.RJFurniture
300 foot drop OR just 4 feet to the cement floor with your favorite plane!
Edinburgh College of Art to Houston, Texas
Geeeeeeeeeeeeeee So sorry fer ya!
But I loved Texas!
"jazzdog, you're forgetting the most important bit. Remember? The cliff-- the one with a sheer 300 foot drop onto broken rocks and crashing waves."RJ,You're apparently not playing the right kind of mood music! A baaaaaad choice can have unfortunate consequences. My personal favorite is an old jazz standard, "There'll Never Be Another Ewe."-Jazzdogg-

Nice to find a non PC forum, all great replys if I may say so.
Lee,
I dubble dirty dog dare ya to post those pics.:)
Well, you know my price, Tim, round trip tickets to Edinburgh and enough dough to sample the local pubs. It's really not a high price to pay.Lee

Sorry you feeel that way, cstan is one of the oldest and wisest members of this forum. You will always get great answers...thought they might not be what you want to hear...and that is your problem...peace and love, jimmy
<<cstan is one of the oldest and wisest members of this forum>>
He is definitely not very wise. And I didn't begin seeing his handle or reading his vitriol until a few months ago.. which has definitely been long enough.
welcome, bill! c'mon in!

<<avoid schadenfrude...trying to avoid taking pleasure in others misfortune....In response to original poster...I'm confused....also a bit tipsy...please clarify....peace and love, Jimmy>>I was congratulating Bill on using the "Ignore" function, which is the only way to tune out the mean-spirited and sometimes hateful comments of some participants here. Where is the misfortune? I agree with others that it is ungracious to slam the person in question. More to the point, though, it is unnecessary: just use the ignore button and move on. There are plenty of people here from the left, right and other who have thoughtful things to say without demonizing their opponents. Regards
Tom

It seems to me that BILL is a firm believer in the TyranyOf The Minority
If a poster's style or language is you're priority, perhaps you should Google lit or political forums.Personally,I'm more interested in charlies WW skill than his prose.WE all are born with our own personal IGNORE button which allows for selective attention. It's always best to use it sparingly .Remember the Desiderata.
Art(old but only sometimes crotchity)
Bill, as I'm sure you've noticed, cstan and I have butted heads several times here at Knots, so you know I'm not a fan of his personal interaction style. I must say, though, I think it's pretty classless for you to start a whole thread bringing everyone's attention that you've put him on "ignore." The fact that you didn't put his name in your original post has no bearing whatsoever: you knew someone would ask, and you willingly confirmed the first correct guess.
We're all free to use the Ignore feature -- I've done it more than once over the past 3 years. But starting a thread like this is, IMHO, in extremely poor taste. Doesn't leave much visible light between your behavior and the worst of his.

Cutting off your nose to spite your face, doesn't improve your appearance.
The loss will be your's alone, Do you think that Cstan cares?
Tom
As a Newbie I will watch CSTAN with interest.
He's been here way longer than you, bucko, as have I, at least 5 years....ah the old days, danno, kim, drew, and the late great Jon... (apologies to Lee and Richard)...wish people here had thicker skins, like the boys on breaktime...Me thinks its time to mix it up here a bit....peace and love, (the soon to be ignored)...exhibitor...
Exhibitor,Sgian and I predate every name on that list. I predate Sgian, that makes me much wiser. Heh, heh, he...Adrian of Cape Breton, absent of late, was the oldest participant I knew of here. Sgian and I have been haunting this forum for a very long time, hmmm, do we need to get a life?Lee
If the new "ctan" is the old "cstanford", then yes, he and I have been deep in the trenches doing bloody combat on several occasions. I have thought, many times, that he gives new meaning to the word curmudgeon. However, I'm with Jaime (forest girl) on this one. To single Charles out in this fashion is a bush league gesture, and I think, mean spirited on your part. For my money, there aren't enough cranky, brutally honest people around here -- that's what makes a forum like this worth following on a regular basis, as long as most of the participants remain polite and civil. These folks are sort of like the collection of spices that can turn a bland, tasteless dish into an epicurean delight. I never ever agreed with any of the political mutterings of the late Jon Arno -- in fact he would often drive me (and many others) to distraction. But he had the unique ability to keep some of those political threads going for 2-300 responses through his sometimes harsh, but artful goading. This forum has never been the same since he left us; and I sorely miss him.Unlike Jon, Charles is sometimes mean and hurtful in his personal comments. But nonetheless, I welcome anyone to this forum who can make me sit up, take notice, and provoke a response. Reading through still another table saw thread every week gets pretty boring. And besides, as others have pointed out, he is one of the few at Knots, who over time, has demonstrated that he really knows what he's talking about when it comes to woodworking.

You're a good bloke if there ever was one.
FWIW, I've agreed with you more times than I have disagreed. Of course, the disagreements are far more memorable, no?
We don't necessarily learn much if all we do is say "yep, you're right", especially if it's mostly out of politeness.
In actuality, I am the most patient teacher you could imagine.

Well I guess due to the nature of the thread this is definitely not the time to sit quietly. The ignore button is there and it is probably there for the very reason that Bill stated. I think that it was fine of Bill to say that he has used it for the first time. Lee asked if it was cstan and Bill replied yes. In my books Lee put the spot light on cstan, but if we don't all join in then there is no spotlight. If there is anything morally incorrect about this thread it is that Lee named cstan and that we are all shining a light on it [myself included]. I usually get a laugh out of cstan. Funny thing, I went to spell check this message and only cstan came up as a potential error!
So..., what? I'm the bad guy here?A little fight breaks out, a bit of excitement, sure I'm in. It's fun.Lee
"IF" there is a bad guy then yes I would say it was you. I'm in on the excitement too.

"Udderly" amazing (hat tip to Rich).
I tip my hat to 21101.20
I almost blew hot coffee out my nose reading that and trying not to laugh. If you build it - he will come.
Speaking of hot coffee, I just received some Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee from my parents who just came back from there. Very good stuff.
blue mountain... it is gooooood coffee, and the most expensive anywhere you lucky guy.
Most expensive anywhere huh? $5.99 a mug. C'mon over....
In my humble opinion, you're crazy if you choose to ignore Charles.
Charles can be an obnoxious S.O.B. and I've never met him, but if he asked me for $100 today I'd send it to him in a minute, trusting he'd pay me back. And I think he'd do the same for me.
Besides being a very knowledgable woodworker, Charles has character.
obnoxious S.O.B..
I just LOVE them folks! I know just where I stand when I post something!
Gee, my grandpa was one hell of a obnoxious S.O.B but I LOVED him anyway! So did most folks that 'really' knew that old pussycat...
I love you guys....
