I picked general becaues I find ya all here!
I need to make / want to make, a clock for my son-in-law.. He is a Dr. of Education, teacher of teachers and a very strange man (to me) that loves my middle daughter and my two adopted grandbabies,,, I could not ask for a better man for my daughter and grandbabies.. She is also a school teacher that gave up the job for school Principal to stay with her ‘of all colored’ babies she teaches… My middle daughter always wanted more colors in her Crayola boxes! He wants me to make a Art Deco http://uv201.com/Clock_Pages/Telechron/electrolarm.htm I went out and bought some true walnut and then I found out he said walnut and the clock is plastic! As in Bakelite.. Any suggestion on how to finish some nice walnut to look sort of like Bakelite and still shows the grain of the walnut.. I am wathing on the clock face with the sun burst from http://www.clockprints.com/pages/contact.html A woman, with a very nice voice, answered the phone and she was very nice to me.. I think I caught her durning dinner/supper? I told her no hurry for the clock faces. I have to ask the folks in Knots what to do from here. What is my next step? The clock shown in the link must be scaled up.. I was thinking of a 8 inch base and about 10 inches tall. Any better ideas as to scale? I think the origianl size is about 6 inches wide, 3.5 deep, by 7.5 Inches wide. Not sure about the original.. As in the original picture, I am not sure of the scale of the towers on the sky-scraper sides…. Help!

Hello Will.
The link you provided only goes to the front page of the website and I can't find the clockface you're referring to.

Sorry.. I am sure I can post a pictue in here.. I asked for the basic FACE WITHOUT Corp. logos..
The brown clock on that page is stated to have been built from wood. If you *really* want to try and simulate bakelite you could try a water based lacquer (to avoid the "richness" of an oil-based one) and rub it down to a very fine grit and then wax.
The high build will simulate plastic and, hopefully the finish will look like the (unpleasant to me) bakelite finish.
Good luck, it seems you have some experimenting to do!

I think I agree.. Now off to find a water based lacquer... I love the 'look' of true walnut, but it his clock.. I do understand why he likes it that way... I have a very old radio I had as a child like that finish. I think I'll see if the old tubes still glow red and purple? And sound?
