Start at a library, you can always find plans in back issues of the popular woodworking magazines, Finewoodworking, Wood, American Woodworker, etc. , then look in the furniture section and you should find several books with plans of all different levels of skills.

Google free woodworking plans. They're all over the web.TFToolfanatic (a.k.a. The man formerly known as "Toolfreak")
Here's a good site for free downloadable plans http://www.the3house.com. Shopsmith has an extensive library, Lowe's has a lot of free plans too. I noticed you're in the U.K. Are you wanting metric? There are free conversion programs on the web if you need to convert them.
