I need a fix, this addiction is strong!!
I would like to thank everyone here that has fueled my new found addiction to old tools. It all started when I innocently asked about a Shelton a few months back and has slowly grown where funds have allowed. I would particullarly like to thank Mack for his list of “safe” sellers, SoCalDon for the Stanley Patricks Blood link, BG for the Nashua tool show, Bob Smalser for his great instruction posts, Mark Roderick for his view of Veritas/Lie-Nielson, and Sarge for his well explained oppinions on why certain tools work for him.
Bellow is a few of the irons I’ve picked up from ebay and other sources. So far I havn’t had much time to work on them, but with school out for the semester, I spent the last weekend tuning the first #5. Hardest part was getting the blade square after years of chips and incorrect sharpening. After that I just followed what I’ve read here and in FWW to get a razor sharp blade (stones only go to 1000 for right now so not super scary yet).
The only one I didn’t purchase is the Handyman I inhereted from my grandfather among many other tools last winter.

Jim,
DO NOT go up to Todd's Farm (1A Rowley)on Sunday Morning (early)...they do not have several Disston dovetail and back saws for $10 to $25.....ya know, with the beautiful handles.....nope not there....
nice catch
I guess I will have to sit at home and work on a beautiful piece of walnut I just picked up. Darn, and I was really looking to expand my saw collection too.
By the way, how do you know where and when all the shows are? Is there a local listing or do you have a callendar with all the shows for the next 20 years on your fridge?Jim

Jim W.,
There are only two antique tool show per year that I'm aware of in our area...both in Nashua, one in April the other in September. On Martin J. Donnelly's web site you can see the dates of all (his) shows.
In addition, there are some auctions if your really bitten:

Thanx for the link, I will have to add some of those dates to my calander. Unfortunately, I will not be able to go on Sat, due to set-up work at my fire station. This year we are hosting the annual firemans muster and there is still much to be done before Sun.
Oh well, at least I will be spending Father's Day alongside my dad, participating in the events I've been watching since I was born.Jim

"TOOLMANIA" -- Yep, one of the strongest addictions around these days! But even so, there are a lot worse things to be addicted to.............
I just hope you're not back in these forums in six months time asking advice on the "best" planer / jointer............
Have fun.
Already owning both (new Ridgid 13 " Planer and a 50s ish Delta Rockwell 6" Jointer I rebuilt) I don't think you will see me post anything like that. Personally I agree with those that are tired of the HELP WHAT _____ TO BUY titles. But instead of complaining about it, I just scroll right on down.
To be honest, what got me into hand tools was the fact that the jointer was too small to surface a 12" wide plank of 5/4 walnut that I picked up to make a jewelry box for my g/f. So, now anytime she complains about how much I'm spending, I just say, well if I never needed it for your gift, I never would have bought it.
Of course this jewelry box is two years in the making and was supposed to be done for Christmas 03, so I think I'll just let her complain, that is untill it's finished.Jim

Uh oh Jim, I only started with one from my great uncle. You might get a kick out of the Mid-West Tool Collecters Assc. http://www.mwtca.com I think. Great info if you join, their reproduced catalogs are great.
Sorry about the photo size, I'm more Neanderthal then computer guru. In case you're curious, there are 70 in that photo, and another 34 scattered about. I was worried about the "shelf" they were on crashing, so they were on the bench while the alleged shelf was being "repaired". Some day they will have a nice cabinet to call home.
You know my favorite part about planes? No sanding! Have fun,
OH, OH, OOOOOO, OH, OH.
I just haven't found anything like that out west.
OH, OH, OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Wow, I think I would have a decent reason to justify a new shop if I owned all those planes. So far I'm holding a good pace. I only allow myself 4 buys a month, unless I find something I can't give up (they pop up every once and a while). So, it should hopefully take me a couple of years to even imitate the collection you have going.
Hopefully along the way I won't have to declare bankruptcy, but tools are even more reason why I like working in the trades, can you say right off...Jim
Coventry Woodworking
Jim,
Ah, don't worry about bankruptcy, you only regret the tools you don't buy, never the ones you do. They are the only tool I've got that actually have appreciated in value, so think investment... Hows that for egging you on?
What plane are you looking for now?Steve
I have 2 #5's, 2 #4's and 1 #3 and I would like to add a #7 to the list sometime soon. So far I've only cleaned one 5 and one 4, the others are still waiting paitently.
I don't know what Types each are, but I hope to be able to learn that soon too. The next purchases are probably a complete set of chisels and some old diston hand saws.Jim
Coventry Woodworking
Jim,
You can curl up some afternoon and check out your Stanley type....
Jim,
I'll dovetail into Macks post, ever try a 4 1/2? My personal favorite smoother size. I like the extra heft. Are you looking for new chisels or old ones? I'd recommend EA Berg if you like the older stuff. Good steel. You'll recognize the shark logo.
I bet you'll be suprised by the Disstons. I needed to cut a wierd shaped chunk out of some 6' by 8' screen frames not long ago. I tried two or three jigs for the table saw, another couple for the bandsaw, and succeded in messing up two frames in one weekend. I proceeded to swear, sit and scowl, ect, then went DUH! and grabed a rip saw off the wall. 30 minutes and they all looked and fit great. Disstons usually go cheap on estate sales too.
Good luck with the addiction. The only known cure is owning one of each tool. Steve

Death also works, for those of us with limited financial resources.
LOL,
Very true, but not a very pleasent treatment I'm guessing!Steve
Jim W.
Hey you've got a nice start going there! ROBWRS has a pretty nice looking user 4 1/2 C up for bid right now! LOL Those old planes are really a kick in the butt aren't they!!?? Enjoy!
Regards,
Mack
