I have a potential good Idea for an invention. what to do with it. I can’t really machine it. I was thinking that I could invent a router bit in that you put sandpaper on to clean up a cut edge like a roundover, or roman orgee. It would be a shaft that connects to a router blank (solid metal shape w/out blades) and onto that you can slip on a special molded sandpaper.

Not to rain too hard on the idea but I don't think it will work. The router, even with speed turned as low as you can go will be too fast. Paper likely to burn the wood and wont last too long if it stayed on. Think of how much wood you can sand with a 2" square of paper before you need to replace it.
Maybe the easiest way to see if it would work would be to get a 1/2" steel dowel machine shops use (http://www.mcmaster.com/ page 3248) and tape/glue a short length of sandpaper to it.
Or you could get some Spiral-Wound Sanding Rolls and a short mandrel from page 2619 to try in a 1/4" router or the die grinder they are intended for. They work fine on metal but clog up a bit on many woods because of the high speeds.
Good luck and have someone ready to unplug for you when you try.;-)
Like most good ideas, somebody's already thought of this one. There are already products on the market designed to sand profiles. There are different styles and varietys. I'm not sure of the specific names for them, but I bet if you google "profile sanders" or something like that, you'll see what I mean.
Edit: Turbosand is the product I'm thinking of. http://www.turbosand.com

seriously, do you have to do it twice?

Sorry, but when I stomp on someone's dreams I want to be sure they are thoroughly trampled down! ;)

I think 20,000 or 30,000 RPM is a little fast for sanding :)
You could get a diamond inpreganted bit and I think it would work..

Tom,
I just looked up your website. Nice website. Always good to meet others interested in carving. I have been carving bowls for about a year. I just posted some photos over in the LONG thread "Jointer plane question? Lie-Nielsen". They are in post 2714. Please let me know if you have any hints on how I can improve my carving.
Thanks,

Hey, man, I love your work. I'm getting OK with the carving stuff - I built a power-carved contemplation bench with an Arbortec head on an angle grinder - it really worked well. Took some guts to carve into a beautiful piece of Tiger Maple... but the outcome was great.Just keep trying with the carving - that's all I can say. I have really got to get my hands on some nice carving tools (gouges, etc.)....Tom Iovino

Tom,
The carving tool that I use 99% of the time when I am carving big bowls is the Pfeil Swiss Made 60mm #7 sweep gouge. It is a sweet tool that takes a razor edge, and can go through hard maple. It takes a beating with a 20 oz. mallet I use, and I sometimes beat on it with a two lb. mallet that a friend of mine turned for me. I bought a set of 12 Two Cherries carving gouges in 1968 and have used them ever since. I now have a part time job at a Woodcraft store, so I can get the Pfeil gouges at a good price, and I have gotten a number of them for my furniture carving. I have not tried the Arbortech full sized wheel, but I have the King Arthur Tool "Lancelots" . I put two of them on the angle grinder and can take a half inch wide cut with it. AMAZING. I tried the smaller Arbortech angle grinder with a two inch wheel and it is a very nice machine. I will check your website every once in a while. Let me know if you ever get up to the Washington, DC area. You are invited over to my home for some good food and to swap some woodworking lies. Have fun.

Thanks, Mel! I'll have to look you up the next time I'm up there...Tom Iovino

Mel,
At which angle do you sharpen your gouges at? Do you sharpen larger ones that you hit with a mallet at higher angles? And what do you use to sharpen?Chris @ flairwoodworks
