I had a almost finger detaching experience..
Know your tools! I could have lost a tip or more of a finger!
I use my many routers all the time. I chose my little Trim router that I do not use that often often. I was on a different planet at the time. I held that little router, with my hand, thinking it was larger.. Big mistake,,
I only cut off a bit of a long finger nail..

I can relate to that except that I lost the ends of three fingers. Now I am a pretty careful type but the danger that gets you is the danger you fail to recognise. I was cutting some ply discs on the router using a centre pin to feed the bandsawn blanks into the cutter to arrive at the final disc. First two OK, no problem. No 3 did not locate on the pin easily and I did not have a good enough grip on it; the cutter grabbed the disc and pulled my fingers in. Two years later my fingers are healed but I still do not have proper sensitivity in the index finger tip.

Jim..
I only use a router bit with a ball bearing for that reason. Or a fence.

When I was five my mom shut my hand in a car door as I was getting in.
I can relate to that.....
My brother (he died several years ago from MS) lost two of his fingers. We were very small children on vacation in Wisconsin. We were feeding a bear with our pop corn. NO, the bear did not attack him or me. I guess he just loved the pop corn and my brothers fingers got in the way? He also lost a finger on his other hand by a power window of our parents car... Back then, I guess nobody thought of getting the cut off part to take to the Emergency Room.. .
Close calls are good for the soul

Close calls are God's way of getting us to focus attention on what we should be paying attention to. When I was five my mom shut my hand in a car door as I was getting in. The top of my middle finger was pinched of and reattached by the town doctor. The top of that finger now looks like Gumby. It's impossible for me to seriously flip anybody off with that finger since whenever I try it looks like Gumby is waving at them. It became a good conversation starter on dates as a kid. The girls thought the finger looked cute and were mesmorized by the telling of how my middle finger was turned into Gumby. The pain of having the top of that finger pinched off has burned into my mind the importance of knowing where my fingers are at all times. Given all the good Gumby does me, I would sure hate to loose him through a stupid act of negligence.

I thank the Lord I am still 100% capable of picking my nose and scratching myself. I have had some close calls at various times and they remind me to keep my mind on the job. Bloodless wake up calls are good!
